    Hell fucking yes.

I’m furious I didn’t know it was a thing for film!

Three days is NOT enough time if you want to give people a chances to check something out. At least a week.

i think people would lose interest if it’s that long tbh. we wouldn’t get through 1960 to now in a full year. also, similar to the films, these threads aren’t going anywhere. i haven’t watched all the films mentioned in the 1963 thread before the 1964 one popped up, but i still plan to.

Yeah, I don't think the lists themselves or watching films as the threads happen is as important as having the threads be a good place to discuss older films/music and get new recommendations. People have still been posting in older threads with their own lists or thoughts even after the three days are up. It just keeps a nice momentum going.

If we did music threads I doubt I'd be able to properly contribute until the 80s or so but I could try and listen to an album per thread as we went along and if I miss a year I'll just carry on with wherever people are up to and listen to older stuff in my own time.

the group posting in the movie threads has been small but it does seem consistent. can’t really think of many who posted a list for 1960 but dropped off before 1965.

The films that have been getting mentioned a lot or winning their respective years are mostly the canon that pops up in all the greatest films of all time list. If people are using the threads to discover stuff that is great, but I think anyone who is interested in learning about film as an art form knows they need to see Yojimbo and Dr. Strangelove if they haven't already.

The truth is that most people don't have a deep knowledge of films from 1965, so you are going to be limited in the number of responses you get. It is why I decided on a top three instead of a top ten. I imagine we will see a lot more people posting and a much wider range of films when we get to the 80's and especially the 90's.

there have definitely been a fair amount that have “won” the years that i had never heard of before the threads popped up. it’s my own negligence about pre-my lifetime foreign films though

i also don’t think there will be as much of an issue with that for music. who hasn’t listened to, like, rubber soul?

I've been using the movie threads both as a place to pick up films I haven't heard of before like A Woman is a Woman as well as incentive to finally watch some from those years that I've always wanted to. It would probably be the same with the music threads.

I’m sure you will end up surprised. Haha

I’ve never heard a Sonic Youth album, for instance. And I’ll put the breadth of what I’ve heard up against just about anyone

The former informs the latter. Very few people are going to pick non-English language music, but subtitles make it easy to watch foreign films.

My lists are going to be something between Euro skramz and J-Pop for a good portion of the 2000's.

well, for better or worse, it helps that a lot of french/german/italian-based bands and singers still sing in english. but, yes, you’re right.

I don't know anything about music, but I always thought it was funny how places like Rolling Stone will do greatest songs/albums/artists of all time and they are almost exclusively in English. If you did that with movies you would be immediately dismissed.

right, i think there’s a conscious choice by artists from non-predominantly english speaking countries to make their music have more broad appeal that doesn’t seem as necessary for films. not that i expect them to

that being said, iirc, tropicalia has been placed prominently on the lists in almost every incarnation of the ranking i believe

Apropos of nothing, tropicalia (as well as bossa nova and other Brazilian genres) are the best. I have a lot of trouble with fully appreciating vocals in other languages myself, but that’s a sizeable exception
