Read so far in 2025: Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson The Island by Ben Coes The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune Currently Reading: The Days of Abandonment by Elena Ferrante I don't think I could have started out the year with 4 more different books than I have so far. Epic fantasy, military action thriller, found family cozy heartwarming, and contemporary lit fic. I wonder what I'll get to next!
Going to add The Island/Dewey Andreas series and The House in the Cerulean Sea to my TBR list. Have been meaning to start the Mistborn series too. Have you read Peter Ash series by Nick Petrie?
While I love the Dewey series, it definitely read as military/American-porn. Invincible CIA op who is always in the right place at the right time to defeat the (for some reason always brown skinned) terrorist. Was interesting to see Coes take the story to Manhattan though. I haven't read Peter Ash - is it more detective thriller or military/army operative thriller? I am growing tired of "plot armor" protecting characters unrealistically.
Ah, I might hold off on the Dewey series then. Peter Ash is more detective-ish thriller, but the character was in the military. Wouldn't view it necessarily as pro-military. It's mostly only mentioned for his PTSD. While there is a lot plot armor, I wouldn't say its too bad. Each book is pretty formulaic to be honest, and some lines make me roll my eyes, but I think they're hard to put down once you start reading.
I really enjoyed the Lincoln Lawyer series. Its formulaic in the sense that there is a case needing resolution in each book, but beyond that it’s pretty engrossing. Tbh I wouldn’t rec the Dewey Andreas series, I read the first 8 entries years ago and am a completionist so I read the newest entry just this month. I rolled my eyes multiple times at some of the plot devices, dialogue, etc.
