I don't think they're rock-bottom, but I haven't returned to them, and they're cut from the same plasticky, generic pop-rock masquerading as a "return to form" that Hurley (and even parts of Van Weezer) are cut from. I'd rather hear them go unabashedly pop like on Pacific Daydream than to try and juggle what they want to do with what the fans want to hear tbh
I think theyre in the not rock bottom, but close to bottom for me. Bland as bland can be but nothing where im like YO THIS SUCKS.
I think they’re okay when I play them, but I also wouldn’t mind a 3 year gap for the next album after winter comes out
The EPs aren’t as offensive as their worst full lengths but the songs feel like bonus tracks that are either genre-exercises or underdeveloped songs that have interesting 15 second chunks mixed in with basic/bland filler sequences. I will say that, although I don’t like the songs themselves, the two singles Records and A Little Bit of Love, sound like actual fleshed out Weezer tracks. I wonder if every song in this experiment is being given the same level of thoughtfulness and energy.
Records and A Little Bit of Love are definitely low-tier Weezer. The rest is like Green-EWBAITE quality, not quite touching Blue/Pink/White/OK Human level greatness. Also, a 3-year gap does not guarantee any level of quality. I'd encourage Rivers to put music out as frequently as he has been so he can churn out whatever failed experiments he needs to get out of his system and we can get to the good shit faster lol.
yeah I retract my statement after re-listening to this song. I must have just skipped through it before it was over before because this blows
I really loved Summer on my first few listens but I literally have not gone back to it at all, I need to give it another go
Both spring and summer are real bad, but I have to admit I think A Little Bit of Love is fine. It’s a corny song that sounds like a million songs before it and the “springy” elements are annoying. but it’s got a coherent melody and the almost cool part where the normal Weezer chunky guitars come in for the second or third chorus. I think for me Summer is probably only worsted by black album. Spring and Raditude at 3rd worst and 4th worst, respectively.
I liked Summer at first but the more I listen to it the more it just feels like Rivers hastily throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks
Isn't that how Weezer has operated through 90% of their career? And don't get me wrong, I like Weezer, but I remember specifically during one album cycle one member wasn't onboard until Rivers reassured him that they do something different every album, so if he didn't like that one, he'd like the next one, and so on. I mean, personally, I'm in favor of bands putting out anything they make. One man's trash is another man's treasure. Let the world decide if they like it or not.
And also, as a huge fan of Green Day's trilogy and the entire Guided by Voices catalog the editing/curating argument has never made sense to me. That's why playlists exist!
Yeah as someone who's listened to most of their discography for the first time over the last year these EP's are pretty on par with most of their stuff.
Hmmm. I’m not disliking these ATMN sound clips. Sort of remind of a beefier Jacked Up with more guitars…which I think works really well for Weezer. Have they reeled me back in? Am I equipped to be get excited and let down 4 times in one year?
wait. People on this site still watch survivor too? It's not just me? Time to migrate over from r/survivor.
