Reading this conversation reminded me of another forum I used to post on where I made comments about a band that was up-and-coming at the time and how I felt they were wasting their talents by singing about what I saw as empty, shallow topics. A lot of time passed, and besides realizing that multiple bands actually read our forum, I also realized how unbelievably arrogant and selfish it was to tell the band what was or wasn't a valuable use of their time, simply because the subject matter didn't interest me. And so I wrote an apology post on the same forum, which the other members thought was weird because they felt the band wouldn't have seen it or given a toss either way, but you never know, and it's because of that I felt compelled to do it and clear my conscience in some way. I especially think a lot about criticism after the passing of Chester Bennington, the extremely negative reaction to One More Light, and his own angry response in the time before his death, and I worry that people can be careless, even dangerously so with their criticism and not being cognizant of how the person on the other end might respond, even to a total stranger.
I'll honor your request to end the conversation here without any more giant back and forths, but I at least want to say that I'm grateful for you taking the time to write such a thorough and thoughtful response.
I used to really enjoy that the earlier albums had some recurring lyrical elements - at least one love song per album (after *IC*), a song inspired by (and often named after) a piece of writing by CS Lewis (or one if his friends/influences), nautical themes, etc. I was bummed when *Palms* was the first to lack the Lewis tie-in, and I was really surprised when *H/E* lacked the love song. I wonder if *West* will include a love song. From the song titles and the lyrics, it looks like the new album will really lean into the West/sunset/astral-bodies-more-broadly themes, and it seems maybe "Albatross" is this album's love song, strangely ("they keep on telling me our stars are crossed / but I think that you might be my albatross"). I do really like that they're continuing the trend of splitting the album into pretty discernible and intentionally crafted halves for each side of the vinyl. This was something clearly very intentionally done on *TBEITBN* with "Seneca" as mid-way segue, and, I'd argue something somewhat similar happens with both *Palms* and *East*. It looks like *West* is setup this way too, with "Dusk" filling the same role filled by "Seneca". That's a great mark of a carefully thought through and crafted album that is really cool to see.
I don't know if everyone saw, but there is a raffle you can enter to win tickets to the upcoming Thrice tour. tnspk.co/zUMm3sk
Just doing my “nightly daydreaming of coming up with tours while doing the dishes” I need a Thrice/La Dispute/Moving Mountains tour. I know that’s a variation of some tours they’ve done before, but Thrice just about to release H/w, La Dispute just released a great record (haven’t listened to them since Wildlife) And moving Mountains just released their best record. Also throw Armslength on there. also I know there were rumors of it, but I wish that Thrice/Underoath tour materialized after they both reunited. 12 year old me would have loved that tour. I wanted to go so bad when I was a 12 to the Thrice, Underoath, The Bled, Veda at the station in Portland, ME
yep, great tour Thrice announce La Dispute, Moving Mountains and and O’Brother as support on U.S. Fall tour
Also I would love for thrice to tour with deftones again but only if they are direct support and get to play for at least an hour their set when they opened for deftones, and rise against was super short
Think it's likely Thrice would take Cave In out? For as often as I hear them cited as an influence, that show would be superb.
That tour ruled. I caught the Animals As Leaders leg of it instead of Moving Mountains. That was actually the last time I saw Thrice.
Palms turned 7 yesterday. Still really love Only Us, Just Breathe, My Sould, Branch In the River, Blood on Blood, and Beyond the Pines. Dig the other songs, too, but these are the cream of the crop for me. And today, Beggars turned 16. At least i think this was the physical release day? I forgot to doublecheck when I added it to my calendar. Didn’t the digital drop in August? Regardless, also jammed it today and still peak Thrice for me.
Palms is overall pretty uneven but it has a handful of their absolute best songs. Beyond the Pines might actually be my favorite track from the band.
I used to be a bit defender of it, but as the years have gone on, I like it less. Yellow Belly, Blur, Promises, Anthology, Words In The Water, and Disarmed are all great for me. I was never big on Cataracts. I hate Call It In The Air, the lyrics are so bad.
