It’s great and has me going back through some of the other late career albums and Tidal Wave is way up there in the discog for me. Top 4 pretty easily
I agree but I feel like the TBS fans outside of this forum don't really know this album and just want to hear Tell All Your Friends live
My experience at most recent show I went to actually was that but with Louder Now at the top. Not my fave crowd ever lol
i do like late era tbs a lot in general even this missed me. i think that made me more offput by it tbh lol. happiness is and tidal wave already had me pretty s'old on their progression, think those are both incredible records
Honestly, the three album run of Happiness Is, Tidal Wave and 152 is pretty special and at this point of my life, I'd rather listen to those three albums than the first three
aside from a few songs occasionally coming on a playlist or something, yeah, i think i've listened to new again more recently than TAYF in entirety.
The issue with playing these large venue shows with other bands from that "era" is that this is the fan base you are going to get at the shows. TBS gets a lot of these people at their shows anyway, but add in the large summer stages and another huge band, this is where we are at.
I do think that has a lot to do with it. As dope as it will be to see Taking Back Sunday and Thrice in the fall, I know the majority of that crowd is gonna want shit from 20 years ago. It makes perfect sense for them to tour with acts like Thrice, Bayside, Coheed, etc, but I think they might feel better about playing newer stuff if they had a newer audience. I don't have any suggestions for facilitating that, but yeah.
thrice honestly you would be surprised at their own headliners but for this show id imagine itd be nostalgia centric. last i saw them they did like 7 or 8 songs off west and it felt like everybody knew the words after only a month time. encore was vesper light and deadbolt and the crowd seemed much more enthused by the former. it was pretty cool
I last listened to TAYF all the way through during a drive from the Philly suburbs to Boston 2 and a half years ago. I actually listened to the whole discography on that trip. It did bring back a lot of fond memories and those songs are all very good for what they were at the time, but I didn’t feel inclined to revisit it again afterward. Its really wild to hear TAYF and WYWTB back to back because once WYWTB starts, its obvious how much they had leveled up by bringing Fred and Matt into the band. anyways, I’ve seen people refer to Happiness Is, Tidal Wave and 152 as “dad rock”, and like, yeah…they’re dads. They’re not gonna write and sing like they did in their late teens/early 20s.
2/3 of TAYF holds up like crazy imo, at least if you have room in your heart for mall emo in the first place. Genuinely believe they never topped You Know How I Do as a song. The WYWTB level up is more in how consistently good (and well produced) it is, not really in how much better the songs are imo.
Set Phasers to Stun What's it Feel Like to Be a Ghost? You Know How I Do New Again Preface --> Flicker, Fade Death Wolf El Paso whatever opens 152
“You Know How I Do” is undoubtedly the best thing they’ve ever committed to tape. A truly great emo song.
Same for Portland with Thrice. The fans not only knew, but engaged with the new songs, especially Vesper Light. I actually staged myself nears the stairs for my exit when that song ended, and barely cared for Deadbolt. A lot of that has to do with the fact that I hear someone being obnoxious and yelling for it at least once at every show I've been to. I became a fan in the Arist era, and Identity Crisis just never did anything for me personally. I'm so glad they found their stride and evolved much further from that sound.
