Welcome to the new worst thread on the website. Encourage each other to rank and argue about ranking the discographies of whatever band we might be talking about at the moment.
at the end of each year someone should rank all the rankings here, and then gradually rank how good each year of rankings were
I would like to get to know the following bands better and am very open to folks who want to rank some of their albums for me so that I know what to dig into for a good experience. Yeah, this is a weird list but hey, if someone wants to actually use the thread for the thing, here ya go Deftones Yo La Tengo Incubus King Gizz Mastodon ETID
Deftones rankings are a fun one. I'd probably go: White Pony, Diamond Eyes, Around The Fur, Private Music, Koi No Yakan, Saturday Night Wrist, Gore, Deftones (s/t), Adrenaline. Their mid 00's period is a bit more divisive but I like those albums a lot. The only kind of clunker in their discography in my opinion is Adrenaline which was a nu metal/skate rap rock type debut which does have some cool tunes but is kinda raw and underdeveloped. They did a more polished version of that sound on Around The Fur and then White Pony really led them to the art-rock/shoegaze-y type vibe which they would mix with their heavier elements. Incubus......is a band I loved in high school and while I still enjoy them, they weren't as deep or insightful as I thought when I was younger. Make Yourself, Morning View, S.C.I.E.N.C.E, A Crow Left Of The Murder, Light Grenades, 8, If Not Now When is how I'd rank them (I never bothered listening to Fungus Amongus). Their initial run from S.C.I.E.N.C.E to Morning View didn't really have a single dud on them. A Crow Left Of The Murder is a fan favorite and definitely their most jam-like album/experimental albums. Since then, it seems like they kind of tread water and refine their sound which is fine but hasn't been as interesting and they seem to be at a creative standstill at this point.
Deftones is a fun one: Diamond Eyes White Pony Private Music Deftones Gore Around the Fur Koi No Yokan Ohms Saturday Night Wrist Adrenaline This is my ranking and it gets a little weird/personal from Gore to Saturday Night Wrist, but I think you could start with any of those top four and not go wrong. They're a band where even their worst album(s) are a 7/10, and Adrenaline is probably the only real stylistic outlier even if some of the albums are moodier or more experimental than others. I can't rank all of the Mastadon albums as I'm still really getting into them myself, but I really clicked with Blood Mountain first. Remission is thrashier than some of what follows, but those first four albums are a really easy and great way to introduce yourself to their discography imo. Beyond that, I really enjoy Once More 'Round the Sun, which I think may be a little more divisive amongst fans/critics. I won't rank the others either without more familiarity, but I can recommend starting points: Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One Incubus - Make Yourself King Gizzard - Nonagon Infinity, Flying Microtonal Banana, Polygondwanaland, and Infest the Rats' Nest (specifically if you are into thrashy metal) ETID - New Junk Aesthetic
this is exactly how I thought of them for a really long time, but I listened to Crow for the first time on headphones and the production and musicianship are SO good that I was like...maybe I should give these guys some more attention and respect.
I'll rank the bands then do a top 3 albums! Deftones 1) Koi No Yokan 2) White Pony 3) Diamond Eyes Mastodon 1) Crack the Skye 2) Hushed & Grim 3) Blood Mountain Every Time I Die 1) Radical 2) Low Teens 3) Ex Lives King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard 1) Nonagon Infinity 2) Polygondwanaland 3) PetroDragonic Apocalypse Yo La Tengo 1) And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out 2) Painful 3) I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One Incubus 1) Morning View 2) S.C.I.E.N.C.E. 3) Make Yourself
