I don't understand how this movie thought it could get away writing Peter as being so astronomically stupid. He hands a weapon of mass destruction that is second only to the Infinity Stones in power to someone he met 24 hours ago who claimed to be from another dimension and explained virtually nothing else about himself. For a character whose ENTIRE deal is "who can be trusted with great power?", whose WHOLE deal in Homecoming was "I have to prove I can earn the powerful suit/a spot on the Avengers", whose father figure is Iron Man whose WHOLE deal was "I have unparalleled power in my control and I have to strenuously and exhaustingly consider how I use that power and who is accountable for it", it is a mind-numbingly dumb scene that flies in the face of everything Peter has been through. And it's the crux of the villain/plot of this movie!

I don't like being hard on movies but this is the maddest a movie has made me in a long time.

Thinking about the scene where a beautiful adult female secret agent tells a high schooler to take all his clothes off, but she somehow didn't realize there was another high school student like 10 feet away, and how that scene only exists so that the high school student can take a picture of Peter in a compromised position to show to Peter's crush, who doesn't seem to care about this character at all and shows legitimately no interest in him, and how that leads to a scene where Peter calls a targeted drone assassination on the high school student, and how the script works so hard to make it so that Peter can't just say "cancel drone strike" but makes him jump through the extraordinarily stupid hoops of basically going "look over there!" to an entire busful of people, who all look over there, because everyone in this movie is so goddamned dumb, so he can jump out of the roof of the bus and destroy the drone with webs. It is the goofiest and dumbest "action" sequence in any MCU movie. Maybe any superhero movie.

What happened to the Jennifer Connelly suit AI? Does Edith just replace her? When Peter creates a completely new suit of Spider-Armor, which he can seemingly do in roughly 45 minutes, is Jennifer Connelly still in there? Or is it Edith? Will he ever be in legitimate danger again? His suits and Edith basically make him Superman, powers-wise. Why does the MCU put Peter everywhere except New York City? Does any of this matter?

    This movie broke my brain.

I do have one question for people that have seen this.

Is there ANY substantial scenes of Spider-Man actually swinging? I couldn't believe the lack of swinging in Homecoming.

I’d say that there are some fun swinging bits in this.

I've yet to see a Spider-Man interview with Jake in it that hasn't made me laugh my ass off. The dude is so random and energetic, I love it.

Yeah there are definitely going to be a lot of aspects to this film that are going to make me angry. Oh well, I just hope it's fun enough.

@Tim Will definitely be interested to know what your thoughts are on this. Given what you think about Homecoming, probably won't be the Spidey movie for you. Knowing that Peter's grief for Tony would play a part in it, I might be a little more forgiving of the dumb decisions Peter makes. I do think you'll still like MJ in this though.

I don't want to give too many detailed thoughts on here since I'm going to be prepping for a roundtable podcast on it. I'm also attempting to not read reviews, etc. until after that's done. But I had fun with it and I know it's not the Spidey for everyone.

    Just a friendly reminder

Not gonna lie, didn't come into this thread thinking that I'd see large, detailed descriptions of scenes of a movie that just came out today. I've made a mistake. ASM2 still sucks.

I didn't even think theaters premiered new films this early in the day. Usually Thursday nights where I am.

With Mysterio considered, it's funny to think all of the destruction that could have been avoided if Tony Stark wouldn't have been an asshole to people. By my count, the villains in IM2 and 3 and Homecoming and FFH are all spawned from him being a dick.

I'd say this movie is too dumb to spoil. But I haven't seen many others be as hard on it as I've been so most people will probably still like it fine.

  17. This was my biggest issue with it as well. Peter’s post-Homecoming characterization might as well not have happened. Yeah, he has a lot on his plate in this movie, but it’s amazing how poorly that scene was written. Felt like a different Peter entirely.

Loved Jake in this. Loved Zendaya. The illusion scene was insanely cool, maybe the best visual effects I’ve seen in a superhero movie. Loved the kids again. Mysterio’s backstory is very good imo (even if the scene where it’s revealed is full of a very bad/corny/not believable monologue). Post credits spoiler: I get why people won’t like the mid-credits scene, but for people my age who came into the Spider-Man universe by means of the Raimi movies will flip their lids over JK Simmons. That was the loudest my theater got, people clapping and cheering when he showed up, and I like how Jameson is Alex Jones-y like he was in Spider-Man PS4. Fury and Hill being Skrulls just seemed like a gag to me, I don’t think Fury was a Skrull before this movie.

There’s a lot to like here. Some of the motivation stuff bothered me but it’s not a disaster of a movie. If you care about these characters, you’ll probably have a good time.

I will apparently never stop confusing Jennifers Garner and Connelly, while also never quite for sure knowing who Jessica Biel is or if her name is actually Jennifer Biel. Which is a bad of me because I actually love Jennifer Garner. She is terrific.

Spider-Verse is a masterpiece, Spider-Man 2 was the height of the genre at the time, I don't find it fair to rank them against the rest.

Homecoming > SM1 > a jumbled mess of stuff that makes me mad.

Despite knowing there will be things in this movie that piss me off, I'm still bummed I won't be able to see it until Friday :/.

Even the worst SM movies still entertain me a lot. I just love the character, even if they miss the mark quite a bit.
