You got a list of classic R&B albums? , not trying to get into the genre (already love it) but it would just be cool to see.
I wasn't sure what I was expecting but I really like the new EP from Michael Barr (used to be in the band Volumes). Not really groundbreaking or anything, just good tunes
I tried to listen to Khalid's album again and I just can't get into it. He's a very boring vocalist imo
I think Google could pobably help you out there. I personally feel that at its commercial hight, (contemporary) R&B was a very single driven genre, meaning that although there are plenty of great albums, there are also a lot of albums with three amazing tracks that everybody still loves and 10 fillers. A lot of those albums are still fun though. Also, remixes where a big thing for while there. Here's a off the top of my head, very subjective list of 5 R&B albums I probably have liked (and listened to) the most in my life or during certain parts of it: R. Kelly - Chocolate Factory Mariah Carey - The Emancipation Of Mimi 112 - Pleasure And Pain Brandy - Full Moon Kehlani - SweetSexySavage I guess I could probably also replace those last two with Donell Jones - Journey Of A Gemini and Jamie Fox - Intuition, but whatever. I'm probably also forgetting some right now. Like I said, very subjective and very driven by the fact that I like a lot of artists because of particular songs they made rather than because of a particular album. Also, just in case: yes, I love Aaliyah and her albums are amazing, I just never had her on heavy rotation.
Thanks and i think that your right about the singles thing in a way i think that if certain albums didn't have singles they wouldn't have sold as well.
I haven't listened to the newest one very often but otherwise I like all of them (which isn't to say the newest one isn't good). She's very consistent and one of my favorite artists in general. If I'd have to pick a second one for you to listen to I'd probably go with "Never Say Never", which is more old school and has "Top Of The World" with Mase on it, one of my favorite songs of all time. A lot of people also like "Afrodisiac", which came after "Full Moon" and has some Kanye tracks and a lot of Timbaland tracks on there. It's a good album but I personally like "Full Moon" more, I think her and Darkchild made some magic together on that album. She's one of those artists that really lost a lot of footing when record sales in general really started collapsing in the mid 00s before alternative models like streaming appeared. It sucks because she's still amazing.
I've been listening to Maxwell's discography non-stop this year, and I feel pretty confident about how I'd rank his albums now: BLACKsummers'night > blackSUMMERS'night > Now > Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite > Embrya FWIW, I genuinely love each album. BLACKsummers'night gets the top spot because Maxwell's vocals are beyond perfect on this particular record. He takes a different approach with his vocals on each album imo, but this is where he hits that sweet spot. He's one of my favourite singers ever without a doubt. Also, "Pretty Wings" has to be one of the best songs ever made. Lots of high praise here I know, but I've really fallen in love with his discography this year.
Every time I read a review of an R&B album on Pitchfork I think of Solange. Most of them are so fucking bad. The fact that R&B and Pop is one category for them is very telling.
