I'll check that out sometime this week and report back with my thoughts. I love BlackSUMMERS'night, it will probably make it into my top 10 this year!
He's been remarkably consistent throughout his career... Urban Hang Suite is still my favorite though.
Craig David's newest CD is finally on Spotify in the US. Can't. stop. listening. More UK Garage than R&B but it's very solid.
i love that question! based on a loose definition of R&B/soul heres a list of some random faves Jeremih, Janelle Monae, Gallant, JMSN, Phony Ppl, D'Angelo, The-Dream, Anderson .Paak, Ty Dolla $ign, Kilo Kish, Kali Uchis, Elijah Blake, Aaliyah
I'm never good at answering that question because I always fall back on the artists I liked the most as a teenager, because of nostalgia and because some of them simply have huge catalogs. That being said it probably looks something like this: R. Kelly (I do not like his last two albums though) Brandy Mariah Carey 112 Tatyana Ali (even though she hasn't made a lot of music) Donell Jones Jaheim Boyz II Men (mostly because their live show blew me away) D'Angelo Cody Chesnutt Joy Denalane (she is German but there is one album that's in English, and they also recorded her German albums in English) Mary J. Blige And many more. I currently really like Ty Dolla Sign, August Alsina and Tinashe. When it comes to R&B, I also really love some albums by artists that I don't otherwise care all that much about (like the second Jamie Foxx album "Unpredictable"). Also, it's really the genre of "let me drop one amazing song and dissapear forever" - shoutout to Yobi and KeAnthony.
Javier (yes, the guy from The Voice) was an R&B singer with a major deal in the mid 00s, and his two albums from that time are really good, especially the second one. I focused my list on contemporary R&B, but I also love a lot of Soul artists. Wilson Picket is one of my favorite artists of all time.
Joe, Tinashe, Alicia Keys, D'Angelo, Jeremih, JMSN, JT, Nylo (not as much of a fan of her newest stuff tho), Miguel, Beyoncé
It's interesting to me that The Voice allows people who had major label deals before to go on the show and even win... but I'll have to check this guy out. He sounds like he's probably really underrated.
It was surprising to me as well. The whole thing is fucking weird, he even has two different artist profiles on Spotify now - Javier Colon, with his post-Voice putput, and Javier, with his first two albums ("Javier" and "Left Of Center"). Winning The Voice didn't make his music any better by the way. Around the time Left Of Center dropped he was one of my favorites though. He was definitly underrated at the time (not so much now), but I remember him having some buzz among "hardcore R&B fans" and critics. I guess I'm happy for him though, a lot of artists like him don't get a second run like that.
I gave some of his stuff a listen a little while ago... this dude has a ridiculous voice!! LOVE this song:
I don't know if Leon Russell could be described as R&B. But he certainly wrote one of the genre's greatest standards with "A Song for You". RIP Leon
I'm currently listening to the new album and it's pretty underwhelming. He's still a great singer though and some tracks on this album are pretty nice (including a mainstream Country song by the way).
