The best way I can sum it up is that I've always been awful at science and my sophomore year I missed a month and a half of school due to a surgery and had to be home schooled. So between that and being in chemistry while being bad at science, it wasn't going very well. My guidance counselor was trying to convince me to take physics my junior year and then physics II my senior year and I was trying to just take astronomy my junior year which would then mean I had completed my science credits and then could avoid taking a science for my senior year. Because I knew physics would tank my GPA. And she wasn't listening. So it got so bad that finally my mom called and just said "Listen. My daughter just wants to play drums. She promises she won't ever try and save someone's life in an emergency room or try and fire anyone off into space. Just let it go."

Thanks a ton man, I really appreciate all this. Sometimes when the stress is really getting to me, I try to find a way to step back and look at things differently. I think one of the best outlets is creativity, which is why I've tried to unwind by practicing music even though I'm still at the very beginning stages of piano, and write stories even when I'm not taking a fiction writing class that quarter. I'm still trying to get better at finding those outlets, but like you said, it's a day by day learning process.

  7. Ugh. Yeah, exactly. One my biggest issue with the schooling system has always been how many people I feel like fall through the cracks. That they want everyone to be in the same box and do the same things. And if you don't find that passion yourself, or if you don't have a random mentor/teacher that sees it and then helps you find it or talk to you, you get screwed. Or pushed through when you shouldn't be. Graduate, go to college, do this, do that, now now now.

stuff about Foxing is terrible. i dont understand why anyone would go to a show with the intent to act like that.

  9. And if you like that, checking out the friend feed gives you basically the same feed but just from those you follows.

  13. Ugh. I read this like four times and tried to decide if I should post about it but don't even know what I'd write.

    Just obnoxious. Some people suck.

  14. Kinda been using this one, but I'll answer um anywhere really you tag me and if I can help.

Absolutely. It's always been frustrating to me, especially in the context of how many arts programs get cut and defunded (also while sports are always untouched?), to be basically told that my talents and what I'm good at aren't valued. At least that's what it's always felt like. Why should I be deemed a non-high achieving student because I'm not great at science and didn't care about other subjects and instead focused intensely on music? I was in 6 bands in high school, and that only includes the school affiliated opportunities. It frustrates me that that was never considered important or valued that I was very committed and very successful in aspects that were still contributing to the school and the community.

    TL;DR: it's bullshit.

  18. Oh man, yeah, that's fucking ridiculous. The funniest part about my entire highschool career was that there was basically zero technology courses. A teacher basically created one for a few of us to do some stuff in our last two years, but it wasn't part of the curriculum. We helped teach the incoming "info. tech" teacher what she should be teaching the next year. Like, they flat out missed the boat on my whole generation on what they could have been bringing to people's attention. All of us that were into computers were laughed at and it was seen as a fad or not really a career opportunity. Good job high school. Good job.

It's ridiculous what activities get seen as a pass or ones that "count" versus the ones that are written off or looked over. My art friends felt the same way. They liked to draw, meh, looked over. Now they're doing graphic design work and got the last laugh. Music programs get destroyed and yet most of the reading shows a direct correlation between happiness, and future "success", and creativity, the arts, and having those programs funded. It's totally backwards in so many ways. Creativity gets pulled from so many students at way, way, way too early of an age.

  20. I hope I was able to combine some of the familiar with the new. I tried to make it feel at least somewhat similar to what people know and love ... but then add on to it.

Yeah there's definitely a lot familiar about it. Obviously the UI is different as well as "Recent Activity" having basically the equivalent of "who quoted me?" and "followed threads" combined into one. But I kind of like the latter being grouped into one.

Overall, I'm liking it and look forward to using it more!

I agree with all of this. I'm really excited because in the next few months I'm going to start finding students to start giving private lessons and I'm really looking forward to the opportunity to help inspire and encourage kids and really people of any age. It's definitely nerve wracking, but I'm hoping I can take some young girls interested in drums who are just starting out under my wing.
