I like that there seems to be a focus on getting the POV of veteran journeyman character actors. They are the ones who a lot of people know and recognize,.but who are also impacted heavily financially by the current situation.

Like anyone who has watched anything in 25 years recognizes Patrick Fischler, even if they might not know his name

Fish Tank always been a fav of mine. Plenty of good stuff in there but that one sticks with me for some reason.

 

I always rec Pariah. Still really impressed it got made. I still haven’t seen it but Watermelon Woman is pretty high on the list of important queer cinema. Also realizing you may already know of one or both of these!

 

Haven’t seen Fish Tank but everything @gonz (Alex) and @Meerkat mentioned are great recs. Apart from those, Paris is Burning is essential. I had a lot of fun with Smithereens. Ratcatcher made an impact on me at the time and Wanda is great.

I’ve heard a lot of really good things about Paris Is Burning, and also Portrait of a Lady On Fire, but I still have yet to see them, so it’s a word-of-mouth recommendation.

Paris is burning is phenomenal. I hadn't heard of it until it was covered on Scott Hasn't Seen and was blown away by it.

 

I've been there so I feel you. I'm a trans woman whose journey into acknowledging my transidentity and, overall, queerness made me retake control of my life and become an active participant (ie. suddenly gaining a newfound curiosity for things, trying on new hobbies, being more present for the people I love etc.) after feeling like a spectator dissociated from everyone and even from myself for so long. So your post resonated a lot with me

 

Echoing the Paris Is Burning mentions, it's an essential watch from just a historical POV. I strongly recommend following it up with this, which fleshes out the interviewees even more as it contains a lot of backstory that got edited out of the initial film due to runtime constraints.

Mostly unfamiliar with the other titles but I remember Portrait of a Lady on Fire getting some praise when it came out.

 

I think Portrait is great but I don't know if I'll ever feel the need to watch it again.
