Golden Globes Review: Glitchy, Hollow Telecast Throws Its Hosts, Winners, and Viewers Under the Bus

While the Globes are the most stark and clearly absurd example of Hollywood being insular, out of touch, racist, etc, a lot of the same critiques apply to other award shows as well. More and more I feel like energy should be completely divested from institutions that are so clearly unwilling to change, or when they do try to make a show of changing, it's incremental and largely an attempt to placate critique as long as these shows can get away with. It's cool when non-white people win, when women win, but why should we keep waiting on these award shows to catch up? blow them up, instead. They've been so shitty for so long, because they can get away with it.

If we must have an institution of recognition, do it like sports. Make it a Hall of Fame where you induct films five years after their release. That way recency bias can fade and no one remembers Green Book/Birdman/The Artist or performances from bad films like Joker/Darkest Hour/Bohemian Rhapsody, or in those five years comes to realize they're shitty.

of course it'd still depend on a functional and relevant voting body and really that's probably the fundamental issue with these award shows, their voting bodies are terrible by design.

Sports are a good example, because it shows the inherent absurdity in awards for an artform.

The goal in sports, from little kids at a park to the professional level, is to win. You win the Super Bowl or World Series or NBA Finals by winning a lot and consistently, so there are no diverging interests. It is measurable and the objective is clear. Film is never that simple; different genres have very different goals. You end up in a situation where you are trying to craft a film in a specific way to achieve a goal that is separate from making the film any good. A football team wants to win, and that includes the Super Bowl. It is not as if they have to do anything different then they would normally do to make that goal happen.

One of the things that always cheers me up is the knowledge that millennials mostly know the song Hallelujah because of a farting ogre.

  13. Hi, I'm back, I guess. I didn't necessarily intend to take a break but that's what ended up happening. How's everyone doing?

Most recently I've just finished rewatching Avatar: The Last Airbender and I'm currently on season four of rewatching Steven Universe; I have them on DVD. Re-experiencing these now as a trans woman is... Interesting. The female character arcs feel like they're resonating wth me more this time around.

A little out of left field, but I'm also in the middle of playing through the numbered Resident Evil games(/remakes) for the first time. Like, literally, I'm halfway through the fourth one. I was reluctant to get into the series at first because I've never really tried survival horror, but it turns out it's not actually that scary. I'm really enjoying the puzzles and the combat, actually, even though 1 and 4 are quite dated compared to the REmakes of 2 and 3.

    Oh, and WandaVision is great.

I have to try Resident Evil 4 again at some point. I really didn't like it and gave up, but then I loved Dead Space which is directly influenced from it. It felt like it was really slow, so I might try it again when I get a new computer.

I was going to post that.

I wonder how many people involved in bad films are up front about the work being just for a paycheck.

If it’s truly shitty actors have to know but something that on paper sounds good but turns out terrible is more interesting to me. Do they realize halfway through it’s complete shit?
