Ha, I feel the opposite. I hate Lobo so fucking much. Also super weird that Batman would be buddy's with someone who's committed genocide. There's fun to be had but it's not a favorite.
It's wonderful. Glad to hear IMAGE is gonna reprint The Other Side. I have the singles from when it was published by Vertigo. That book was really awesome. Such a solid debut.
I'm up to Gravel on My Guts in like two days, it's so hard to stop reading. Dead Mothers was incredible.
I've got mixed feelings on Metal. Loved The Forge and The Casting, as well as all of the Snyder/Capullo New 52 run, but something's off for me with this, convoluted continuity issues aside. Once Kendra flipped the multiverse map over, the whole story felt like Justice League does Stranger Things and little else. Of course I'll still be reading and buying all the issues and one-shot tie-ins, but it was too glaring a similarity that my expectations feel extremely let down by the explanation of the dark multiverse after all the hype going into this event.
PREVIEW: Clueless: Senior Year by Amber Benson, Sarah Kuhn & Siobhan Keenan Forgot this was coming out. Looks like fun. I don't know that the charm of the film could translate to a comic book, but at least the art is cute.
Just thought I'd let you know that I really enjoyed this, I decided to give your podcast a go on a whim last week after you posted it in another thread (I downloaded last week but finally got round to it today) . My knowledge of comics is pretty limited (outside of films/tv shows/cartoons) so it was cool listening to people talk about them in this much depth. I've since decided that I'm going to try delving into comics more and I'm giving Marvel Unlimited a go (for at least a month and see where it goes from there) along with grabbing a few free ones on Prime off the Kindle App.
Nice. If you end up wanting some recommendations for any particular characters and/or genres, just let us in this thread know! We love helping people dive deeper into this medium. And also, obviously, you should check out some more episodes of @Deanna's podcast if you liked that one. I'm on two other episodes about comics (All-New Wolverine and All-Star Superman), and she's talked to other people about some other cool comics.
Glad you enjoyed it! And like @Tim mentioned, there are quite a few podcast episodes. I have a google doc of them floating around this thread somewhere but they're all pretty easy to just find on the site or in the feed on a podcast app if that's how you listened. Can't recommend Marvel Unlimited enough. It might be overwhelming sometimes, but there's so much you can start with and have a good experience with it.
And here's that updated Google doc with all of the comic book episodes. Movies included. WTG Comic Book Episodes
Thanks, yeah I've downloaded a couple more podcasts so I'll check them out when I get some time later this week. I read the first post in this thread and decided to start with some of the recs there and see where that leads me. I've gone with the following to get me started: Alias, as I like Jessica Jones as a character and have heard good things about that comic before. Hawkeye: My Life as a Weapon as that sounded pretty interesting, plus I wondered if I'd like his character more in comic form (as I'm not a massive Renner fan in the mcu). Superior Foes: as you both made it sound like it was a interesting take on the spiderman world which out of all the marvel characters is one I'm more familiar with. I'd like to read some of the Miles Spider-Man stuff too but not sure where to start with that one, so figured I'll see how I go with the others first.
That's awesome. Thanks so much! Also, just a heads up that I created a thread for the podcast if you ever want to hop in there to discuss episodes, suggest topics, etc. Here's that if you want to follow it. Podcast - Welcome to Geekdom
This week only has two trades I want to pick up so I may order the #1's from the front page I don't own. I'm pretty behind anyway though. I have 10 Fables books that are weighing down my table. lol
Hawkeye: My Life as a Weapon was the comic that completely pulled me into actively reading comics as an adult. That and G Willow Wilson's Ms Marvel are largely why I read new issues every month right now. Miles Morales is actually not that hard. Like everyone in Marvel and DC, his history sounds confusing for a brand new reader, but he's new enough that, once someone gives you the basic timeline and some background on the Marvel multiverse, you can follow his solo titles chronologically and not be confused at all: The first Miles series was called Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man; it started in 2011 and lasted 28 issues. This series takes place in the "Ultimate Marvel" universe, which was sort of a modern reboot of classic Marvel, but as a separate universe so that these characters could get a new start without affecting the main Marvel universe that's been running for decades. You can just jump into this with the first issue and read through the end without any interruptions or confusion. There was a 5-issue miniseries during this time called Spider-Men that had Miles team up with the main universe's Peter Parker in a fun interdimensional adventure, which can be read at any time during or after this run. After this came a 5-issue event miniseries called Cataclysm: The Ultimates' Last Stand (which did have a 3-issue tie-in called Cataclysm: Ultimate Spider-Man). A lot of people end up skipping this event (I initially did) and are fine, but if you want to be a completionist, it's worth checking out. It does affect the next run of Ultimate Spider-Man, but in a way where you shouldn't be too confused. The second ongoing run of Miles stories after Cataclysm was called Miles Morales, the Ultimate Spider-Man, which was launched in 2014 and lasted 12 issues. Not much to say about this except that it's just a continuation of the last run which simply started at #1 again after Cataclysm so that new readers had a natural jumping on point. After this run ended, the Ultimate universe was destroyed in a big event story called Secret Wars (2015), which was awesome but was part of a large Avengers storyline that might not be accessible to new readers. All you need to know is that the Ultimate universe is gone, but because Miles Morales gave some near-omnipotent character an old cheeseburger from his pocket (no, seriously), his entire supporting cast was placed in the main Marvel universe as if they had always been there. Plus, a major supporting character who was killed was brought back to life. This brings us to the current ongoing series, which is simply called Spider-Man and started in 2016.
I should just save my Miles Morales explanation, with how often I give it, lol. This time was easily my most detailed.
Sweet, cheers for this Tim this is a huge help. I'll be sure to check this out as I've always wanted to learn about Miles. And good to know I've chosen well with Hawkeye, that's the first I've started reading out of the ones I listed (and I'm enjoying it so far).
Has anyone read the No Man's Land run of Batman? The concept seems so cool but the arc is massive and I'm not sure how I feel about committing to that.
