If I haven’t played the game, I look at it as a choice between which game I’d rather play. For the matches that are between a game I know and one I don’t I look up the one I don’t at surface level and try to decide fairly from there. Not the best system, but I can always go back to abstaining from certain matches if that’s better.
I think it's fine if you want to skip a match up. In brackets for songs it's easy to give both a listen before choosing but you can't play every game. match 1: Portal 2 Easy choice, incredible game. match 2: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Another pretty easy choice for me, Smash Bros is great but this was one of my favourite PS2 games. match 3: Dragon Quest XI Pretty close for me I just appreciate DQ a bit more. match 4: Advance Wars Never been a big Fallout fan. match 5: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time I'd be fine with this winning the whole thing. I still think it's pretty perfect. match 6: Silent Hill 2 Hardest choice of the round, I love both of these but SH2 just left a stronger impression. match 7: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 This game is rad as fuck. Spent a silly amount of time on this back in the day. Stardew never appealed to me much. match 8: Earthbound Another difficult one but I think i appreciate the weirdness of Earthbound too much. It's just such a unique experience.
The thing is, I feel like I'm video game literate” enough to in many cases say which games is probably “better“ without having played much of either, but if this contest is favorite rather than best then I really shouldn’t go about it that way and just abstain. I‘ll just wait for Shrek lol
Man, TimeSplitters 2 was great. Have a lot of fond memories of 8th grade and playing that at a friends house a lot with our group of friends
totally up to you. im abstaining in rounds for games i haven't played but i dont think its wrong not to if you're relatively informed on the games in a matchup
Votes: Portal 2 Prince of Persia Dragon Quest XI Fallout: New Vegas Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Silent Hill 2 Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 Fire Emblem: Three Houses Had a look at some of the matchups for later and it's gonna get rough!
Pokemon Black/White Quite possibly the best Pokemon games and some of the best JRPGs of all time. I say possibly because I don’t actually remember if I like BW1 or BW2 more, I just know it’s incredibly close. Dragon Quest XI I don’t think DQX1 is as good as it could have been, but it is a damn fine game, especially the Switch version. If I had to recommend someone one DQ game to start with, I’d probably go with that version of DQ11. The Batman games on the other hand, although not without some appeal, poisoned video game combat for years. Fallout: New Vegas Not only the best Fallout game, but one of the best western RPGs of all time. Easily one of my 10 favorite games of all time. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Timesplitters 2 is a classic, but it’s not quite OoT. Very few games are. WW and BotW are, but we’ll get to those. Stardew Valley I love the Tony Hawk games, but, nostalgia aside, the first few, especially 1 and 2, just aren’t nearly as good in terms of gameplay as 4, THUG and THUG2. Stardew Valley on the other hand is great might and actually be the best option for someone looking to get into Harvest Moon-likes in 2020. It’s also truly beautiful game. Fire Emblem: Three Houses This was a hard one, but actually playing Earthbound isn’t as fun (anymore) as I would like it to be. Mother 3 on the other hand... Here’s the list @Shrek : Pokemon Black/White Dragon Quest 11 Fallout: New Vegas The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Stardew Valley Fire Emblem: Three Houses
Portal 2 Prince of Persia Batman: Arkham Asylum Fallout: New Vegas Timesplitters 2 Silent Hill 2 THPS2 Earthbound Prince of Persia has Jake G. in it so it can't be bad. Arkham Asylum is one of my favorites of all time. Never played a Fallout game but heard good things. Timesplitters 2 my stepbrother and I co-oped in HS and I have very fond memories of that. Silent Hill 2 is the one I'm most interested in out of those 2, same as Earthbound. THPS2, COME ON NOW, one of the greatest games of all time. Absolutely no contest
Portal 2 Smash Bros Melee - I have had countless hours of fun with my friends with, easy choice. DQ XI - An absolutely incredible classic turn-based JRPG in a day and age where turn-based JRPG's are very hard to come by New Vegas Ocarina of Time DMC3 THPS2 - I loved this game so much when it came out Earthbound - bummed it came out against Three Houses but that's just the way these things work sometimes! Earthbound is a top 5 game of all time for me. It's uniqueness, originality, and incredible world it builds is just as good as it gets. It's also a pretty damn hard RPG. I'll play Earthbound every few years and love it, even more, every single time. I really hope anyone with even a semi-interest in RPG's plays Earthbound someday in their life. I also hope it makes it past this brutal first round matchup!!! I WILL pay people off to vote for it
I think Devil May Cry 3 is actually the best starting point for that series. It's a prequel so you don't really need to know anything about it and it's fucking ace.
Portal 2 Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Dragon Quest XI Advance Wars TLOZ: OoT Silent Hill 2 Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2 Earthbound
I think the difference between my and most of you is that I really approach my list and my voting based on the thought "how much would I enjoy this now?" or "what would I rather play these days?", but it doesn't matter of course
i do this too (largely). a couple of oldies for me went through here because they were up.against genres i really don't care for, like fps. when it comes to Tony Hawk v Stardew, i love Stardew but i prefer an Animal Crossing or a Rune Factory whereas Tony Hawk is in its own world as i don't care for Skate.
My thinking is that I'm going for enjoyment that I received from playing the game, whether that was at the time it came out or whenever. If that factor is equal between the two games, I'll consider outside factors (legacy, how it holds up today, etc.). So like even though Dragon Quest XI (for example) is a great game, I'm picking Arkham Asylum over it because that game blew my mind when I first played it back in the day.
I'd also be fine with Arkham Asylum getting knocked out in favor of DQXI because Arkham City is the better game anyway and it's in the bracket as well.
match 1: Pokemon Black & White match 2: Super Smash Bros. Melee match 3: I cannot answer this one so leaving blank match 4: I cannot answer this one so leaving blank match 5: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time match 6: Silent Hill 2 match 7: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 match 8: Fire Emblem: Three Houses
I'm just going for whatever game I like more overall, how well it stands up today is a big part of that.
For me that doesn’t work because I enjoyed everything more when I was a kid lol Even very mediocre platformers I probably enjoyed more then than I do games I think are great now
