So there is some negativity you don’t give a pass to.

Cute. I’ll let this exchange stand for itself. Ciao.

That’s not cute at all. You’re making excuses for grown ass men in a professional band to be shitty to fans. Pathetic.

Did they tell any particular fan to their face to pound sand like you just directly insulted me? Or are you extrapolating from a generalized statement and being the hit dog who hollered? You had no reason to be shitty to me just now, but leapt at the opportunity. Reflect on that.

Gee, I wonder if I had a point in doing so. Hmmmm

The band has made multiple comments aimed directly at fans like me. They delete comments on socials that are negative or question who is singing. You have no reason to defend them. The band has chosen to be clowns about it rather than just be a band. Why do you defend them? Nothing said on here has been exaggerated or made up. Reflect on that.

    “Fans like me”

So you’re projecting. You’ve chosen to take it personally because you seemingly align with the people who were so venomous that they broke the band’s diplomatic streak. You’re upset that they’re not using their social media like a public square for people to vent frustrations about a lineup choice that was out of their control. You’re entitled, and you’re lashing out as a result. Please visit your local park and touch an abundance of grass.

It’s sweet that you accord me so much power, but let’s be honest, you were looking for a reason this whole time. Glad I could give you permission to finally be yourself, warts and all. I’m gonna go give my kid a bath, and you can continue to be performatively mad on the internet. I hope it’s as fulfilling as it looks!

Also, my name was on a list a page or so back saying I say a lot in this thread. Feeling proud.

To a previous point made in this thread, at this point they 100% have done “eff Stephen, go with Matty”

What was put out as a public release about Stephen’s departure 2 summers ago (correct me if I’m wrong), had changed drastically for better/worse depending on what side you’re on. A break from touring from Stephen has turned from him still being present in studio to now re-recordings of classics and moving forward with a new vocalist.

Still love this band but it’s definitely frustrating in this new timeline. Always have their back catalog to jam to. I also highly suggest a reverse discog run. Just completed one and was so happy.

I don't consider Stephen to be in the band, I see him as a special guest for few and far between shows

  16. Nah he's still in the band, he just goes to a different school now I swear

But on a serious note, I hate the direction of the band, both artistically and how they interact with fans. Leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

is it the same for you? Prestigious

It seems like most of the holdouts are the people who were the biggest fans of the band before (i.e. not the casual fans who only liked Never Take Friendship Personal or Cities or just the singles). If you're a casual fan, you might just want to hear the song(s) you already know, but more dedicated fans of a band like this are going to have more of an interest in hearing growth/development and new music (maintaining some core of what the band is).

I don't think Matty's ever going to be our real dad, and making/remaking music that imagines what it would've been like he was in the band in 2006 isn't the going to get any of the holdouts to buy in. I think the biggest part of what made this band special to people (unique singer/lyrical perspective aside) was the consistent progression and exploration of different sounds. It's what made the melodic/hook jump into Never Take Friendship Personal fun, what made the overall creativity and darker sounds in Cities and Vital so successful, and what made the edge of Lowborn and the EPs exciting on either side of the hiatus. Maybe they genuinely feel like they want to be calling back to the older sound at this point, but it's dissonant in context of every other moment of their career.

I'm personally not in on Matty rerecording things and I'm really not interested in seeing this weird knock off nostalgia act approach live, but I'm also not opposed to hearing them expand parts of their sound that are a good fit for Matty's voice while not pandering to what they were doing 20 years ago. There are definitely versions of this lineup that could get people like me to buy into this as something new instead of feeling like a failed regression. I don't think "Seven" is anywhere near the best song on Vega, but it's at least somewhat interesting on the whole and it's moving forward instead of backward. Even if the chorus is pretty paint-by-numbers, the verses of "Walk Alone" have some cool instrumental stuff and some propulsion in the vocals that feels meaningful. "High Stakes," though, is the exact opposite of what I want them to be doing. I absolutely don't need Matty to be writing awful lyrics over unused music from a past era of the band (and it would probably be best if they cut back on the vocal processing more generally). I also really don't need them being vocally shitty about fans not liking their approach to things. I'd love to support the guys, but they're regularly making it hard to want to before even getting to the merits of the music.

tl;dr: Yes, he could potentially win some people over, but the band currently doesn't seem interested in pursuing the ways it could happen.

It’s made worse by how dishonest they’re being about everything. They’re going to painstaking lengths to avoid saying Stephen is gone for good when all signs point to that.

The posters above said it better than I could, but yeah I'm just not interested in the kind of music they seem to be intent on making with Matty.

The ocean noises are a good note to end on for now.

It takes strength to be gentle and kind Supporter

Take this with a slight grain of salt as I am not anberlin’s number one fan (I’ve checked their whole catalog, but I’d put them more like B level fan: love the classics, feel tepid to good about rest), but I love the high stakes direction, I just wish it wasn’t with Marty. If Stephen sang that song (and obviously would have written better lyrics), I feel like it would be heralded as a “return to form” single.
