YG Spiritual album of the year, one of the most assured and fully-formed afro pop records ever, every song bangs and the production is so layered and lush that when burna isn't singing i sometimes wonder if i've wandered into a more syncopated sade record
it's insane that every song on this sounds like a hit "Dangote," "Secret," and "Anybody" are my faves atm
outside was a great record but "ye" towered slightly over everything else. "anybody" is an eternal jam but there's way less of a gulf between that and the other material here. every detail of "secret" is so gorgeous
I gotta hear this. Liked the last album but never stuck with me in the long run. His DJDS collaboration EP was really nice. Sounds like this is pretty major though.
Really cool to see. My (admittedly minimal) experience with afrobeat has mostly been as a singles genre so it's pretty amazing to have a major, cohesive work like this. Seems like this is already a landmark record for African music.
I too am a major novice on that entire world of music, but I will give the obligatory recommendation to check out some Fela Kuti albums Burna Boy's godfather was actually Fela Kuti's manager and a bunch of Burna Boy songs sample FK tracks so there is that lineage there I'm sure @The Lucky Moose and @unbornwhiskey have more recs as well though
There’s a lot of albums in my the “afro genres” coming out of France every year too, but yeah I would agree that singles are the priority now. I’m also not an expert. I do deep dives occasionally but it’s hard to constantly keep up with it. We have a thread for it and other genres tthough: African and Caribbean Music • forum.chorus.fm @username
Honestly, all the features on here go. Despite being a big fan of both, I'm still surprised how well Future and YG slip into the sound here.
Totally, BB & the various producers were super adept at employing all these western guests in a way that feels totally organic, and not a transparent bid for more crossover success It's really cool to see a Nigerian artist blow up, but really on their own terms
