Top ten box-office films of 2015:

    1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens
    2. Jurassic World
    3. Furious 7
    4. Avengers: Age of Ultron
    5. Minions
    6. Spectre
    7. Inside Out
    8. Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation
    9. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2
    10. The Martian

What are your top three films for 2015? We will keep a running tally and eventually have some sort of bracket. For me it would be:

    1. Arabian Knights
    2. Knight of Cups
    3. Cemetery of Splendour

What are some of the forgotten gems from the year? What is overrated? What did you discover at a young age and what did you discover later?

Blackhat, The Treasure, A Very Murray Christmas, and Right Now, Wrong Then were all close. The worst movie was The Danish Girl, in a walk.

Also love Tangerine, Jupiter Ascending, World of Tomorrow, Dope, Chi-Raq.

I contributed to the kickstarter for Anomalisa in 2012 and was promised a copy of the movie, so when it came to theaters in 2015 I didn't go see it and as of now (2021) I still have not received my copy (and if you look at the comments for the kickstarter there's hundreds of people saying the same thing). Anyway, I've never seen Anomalisa, The Witch, Creed, Crimson Peak and a few other notables.

This was a really hard year to narrow down. Tangerine, A Bigger Splash, Anomalisa, the Lobster, the Witch, Bridge of Spies, and Green Room were all experiences I enjoyed a lot.

Not a big year for me. Enjoyed Spotlight too. Still haven't seen The Martian or The Revenant, which I'm kind of embarrassed about.

Leaving out Sicario and Green Room was hard. Realistically you could shuffle those 5 movies around in any order and on any given day I would probably be OK with it

I think number 2 to Mad Max: Fury Road is a strong endorsement! And not every conversation, at least not in awhile. But as a quasi-musical/story about authenticity in art/masculinity it's singular, plus some of Soderbergh's best work as a DP.

Mad Max isn't on my list, but it is probably the best big-budget action film in this century. It isn't even doing anything particularly unique, instead just taking the audience for a ride while cutting out so much of the fat in these three hour superhero movies. It even earns a genuine emotional moment, when Furiousa and Max nod to each other at the end.

The choreography is remarkable. The action scenes have so much kinetic energy, and yet it's totally clear and easy to follow. So many action scenes are overstuffed with CGI and edited in a rapid-fire motion so you have no idea what's actually happening. Mad Max does neither.
