These guys are admittedly a big blind spot for me - very familiar with their story, but way way less familiar with their music.

So unfamiliar that I didn't even realize their debut came out in '92 - so thanks! Adding this to the list for today.

Bolt Thrower slows down the riffs for more of a doom influence on there crushing 1992 album IV Crusade.

Pat - gonna share your sentiments on that Manic Street Preachers LP. This was WAY more accessible and massive sounding than I was anticipating. Talk about swinging for the fences - there's a lotttt to unwrap here. Can really see why the critics latched on to this band, had to be super exciting to be hearing for the first time in '92.

I think that the only Manics songs I have heard before today were from after Richey Edwards disappeared, and they had sort of eased into a more typical mid-90s alt-rock sound.

What a great add to my musical library, thanks for noting it!

Only managed 2 more listens after Waits:

The Jayhawks - Hollywood Town Hall
Great stepping stone to the awesomeness of Tomorrow the Green Grass. Really strong songs, well sung, detailed Americana arrangements. What’s not to like.

Radney Foster - Del Rio, Tx, 1959
Absolutely wonderful. Perfect balance of traditional structure with contemporary lyrics and a touch of Nashville ‘90s polish. “Nobody Wins” is the best of a great batch, and not just because it has guest vocals from one of my favorite artists of all time

forgot to post the winner last night. RATM's s/t wins with 17, R.E.M.'s automatic for the people was close with 16, and slice in chains' dirt had 13. working on '93 now.

As coincidence would have it, "Nobody Wins" just popped up on the new country covers record that American Aquarium put out on Friday.

Automatic for the people goes beyond what a normal album is for me. I was born in 1983, and I have a brother who was born in 1976, so in the early 90's, at my house you could listen to REM, Pearl Jam, RHCP, RATM, etc. But this album was different. The songs, JPJ's work with the string section, that unique atmosphere ... There are many days when I think that Nightswimming is the best song I have ever heard in my life.

The hits: Man on the moon and Everybody Hurts.
The lesser known songs: Try not to breathe, Ignoreland, The Sidewinder ...
The weird ones: Sweetness follows and Star me Kitten.
The special songs: Drive, Find the River and the aforementioned Nightswimming ...

Nothing is left over or missing. The sound is unique and special, the band is in a state of grace and Stipe's level is otherworldly.

Probably the album of my life, there's nothing like Automatic for the people.
