Rage Against the Machine's self-titled debut won 1992. Let's see who wins 1993.

    Billboard chart-topping albums of 1993:
Whitney Houston - The Bodyguard (cont. from 1992)
Eric Clapton - Unplugged (cont. from 1992)
Depeche Mode - Songs of Faith and Devotion
    Aerosmith - Get a Grip
    Janet Jackson - Janet
Barbara Streisand - Back to Broadway
    U2 - Zooropa
    Cypress Hill - Black Sunday
    Soundtrack - Sleepless in Seattle
Billy Joel - River of Dreams
    Garth Brooks - In Pieces
    Nirvana - In Utero
Meatloaf - Bat Out of Hell II
    Pearl Jam - Vs.
    Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle
    Mariah Carey - Music Box

    Billboard chart-topping singles of 1993:
Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You (cont. from 1992)
Peabo Bryson - A Whole New World (cont. from 1992)
Snow - Informer (cont. from 1992)
    Silk - Freak Me
Janet Jackson - That's the Way Love Goes
    SWV - Weak
    UB40 - Can't Help Falling in Love
    Mariah Carey - Dreamlover
Meat Loaf - I'd Do Anything for Love
    Janet Jackson - Again
    Mariah Carey - Hero

What are your top three albums for 1993? We will keep a running tally and eventually have some sort of bracket. For me it would be:
    1. Nirvana - In Utero
    2. Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream
    3. Pearl Jam - Vs.

What are some of the forgotten gems from the year? What is overrated? What did you discover at a young age and what did you discover later?

From here out will be crazy hard for me. Following this exercise has really made me realize some of my blindspots, and as someone pretty well versed in the 60s but with only select favorites from the 70s and 80s, it's been a pretty long stretch where I haven't had what feels like an educated opinion outside of Pixies good and Loveless GOAT. 1993, in which I turned 5 years old, kind of feels like it marks the start of the music of my conscious lifetime.

Still thinking about the 60 songs that explain the 90s episode about SP where Bill Simmons said it should have ended with Silverfuck. Sweet Sweet forever.

The importance of those Top 4 records on my formative years is absolutely immeasurable. They are all such classics and the order could switch any day depending on my mood.

My other hot take is that I would potentially take Vs. and In Utero over Ten and Nevermind. But fortunately, we don't have to choose, we can keep them all!

    1. Bjork - Debut
    2. Kate Bush - The Red Shoes
    3. Counting Crows - August and Everything After

Number one was the easiest choice, Bjork's debut, and one of the most playful, spontaneous and just downright joyful albums ever made. It's an album that's greater than the sum of its parts, as it occasionally doesn't work on an individual song level - but as a whole 50 minute piece of music, and a debut release, announcing herself as a solo artist, it's just wonderful. The best bits are when you can hear her smiling as she sings. Make sure you check out bonus track Play Dead too - one of her absolute best.

The Red Shoes is my favourite Kate Bush album, and sort of the opposite (ish) of the Bjork album, where it's incredibly strong on an individual song level, and on a song-for-song basis is better than anything Kate Bush released previously. It's not as ambitious or as wild as something like Hounds of Love or The Dreaming, but it certainly goes underrated in her catalogue, as every single song on here is pretty close to perfect.

Third was a lot more competition, but went for August and Everything After as just a beautiful collection of folky alternative rock tracks, and Counting Crows at their best. Pretty much all my favourite songs of theirs appear here.

    Honourable mentions;

Fugazi - In on the Kill Taker: Just another remarkably good Fugazi album, it's sort of hard when all their albums are so consistently great for one to stand head and shoulders above the other, but everything is always worth listening to.

Jawbreaker - 24 Hour Revenge Therapy: A fantastic bit of pop-punk / early emo, and the record that made people think Jawbreaker could be the next Green Day. They obviously weren't, but their "independent" records are just as good as Green Day's.

Nirvana - In Utero: Maybe their best album? Darker and rougher than Nevermind, but from a pure songwriting perspective, they're at their best here.

Wu Tang Clan - Enter the Wu Tang (36 Chambers): An absolute all time great ensemble hip-hop album, with a dozen or however many distinctive voices climbing over each other on this - and elevating each other's parts.

A Tribe Called Quest - Midnight Marauders: Not much of a change from Tribe's previous records, but a bit like Fugazi, they were just so consistently good.

NOFX - White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean: Just very dumb, classic NOFX stuff, showing their great ear for melody and propensity to be really annoying.
