Herbie Hancock’s Takin’ Off is goddamn incredible. What a record. I need to hear more Freddie Hubbard stuff. I’ve loved his playing on Billy Joel’s “Zanzibar” since I was a little kid and he still always blows me away.

    Top 3:
    1) The Supremes: Meet the Supremes
    2) Peter, Paul & Mary: Peter, Paul & Mary
    3) Patsy Cline: Sentimentally Yours

    Runner Ups:
    Bob Dylan: Bob Dylan
Joan Baez: In Concert, Pt. 1
Ray Charles: Modern Sounds in Country and Western

Realized I should've included Showcase on my 1961 list, so I'm making it up for it by including Patsy here. Any of the runner ups could really make a case for the top 3 though.

I also listened to and enjoyed:
    Roy Orbison: Crying
Aretha Franklin: The Electrifying Aretha Franklin
    Howlin' Wolf: Howlin' Wolf
    The Beach Boys: Surfin' Safari
Ben E. King: Don't Play That Song!

Last ride of ‘62 had to make sure to get in Pat’s rec:

George Jones Sings Bob Willis is some STRAIGHT honky tonk. Not a style I’m totally immersed in yet but I liked this. He’s such a good singer. Two of the songs were...pretty dated lyrically in a not great way, but the rest was pretty excellent. Especially the (apparently) deep cut “The Warm Red Wine”. And I LOVE that he leaves the last two cuts to just the band. In most cases that’s a typical early ‘60s filler move, but on this one it lets the band that’s been killing it all album cut loose on some Western swing and it makes the album.

Ray Charles’ Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music takes this one and will move on. I’ll post the ‘63 thread in a few hours.

So I meant to post this and forgot....but after the 1960 thread I was looking through my grandfather's dsicography, and a lot of it predates 1960, but at least a couple where the years are known are in the 60's. This one was from 1962. Def can see the evolution in his interests, getting away from that jazzy rockabilly sound of the late 40s/50s and getting more into that 'country' sound.
