I found Something in the Orange on Tik Tok, as one of those teaser videos before the record came out. Figured I might as well check out the older stuff while I waited for American Heartbreak. While I waited I fell in love with Elisabeth. Been hooked since!
I think I read about American Heartbreak in the Country Thread in 2022, or if not here then somewhere else. I specifically checked out American Heartbreak because I read that it is a tripple album, and that is the exact kind of nonsense I can get behind.
OK so here's something that might spark debate. I've been crafting a 10-song Zach mix to introduce a friend to his music. She isn't into country at all, but into most anything else. I tried to put together a really good INTRO mix, only 10 songs. Don't think of it as "his best songs" verbatim but rather, a mix to start someone off. This is what I came up with... 1. You Are My Sunshine 2. Overtime 3. Something In The Orange (Z&E's Version) 4. Oklahoma Smokeshow 5. Nine Ball 6. East Side of Sorrow 7. Oklahoma City 8. I Remember Everything w/ Kacey Musgraves 9. Ninth Cloud 10. From Austin
You are My Sunshine is one of the only songs I skip if I have his stuff on shuffle. see what he was doing there but its just not something I want to hear more than once. To be honest I feel like the live album is such a good introduction in of itself. There’s so many good choices. I’d end it with Revival. I just watched some video of this tour and it gives me vibes from the “Lifted..” tour by Bright Eyes but less drunken mess and more appreciative.
That's so funny none of you like the cover, I think it's such an automatic "oh this is who he is" song to hear his take on a classic and works really well as a track 1. Also surprised at the Dawns suggestion, I don't feel like there's much in that song to grab onto and feels more like a deep cut
I’d add Fear and Fridays. Not his best song but a good gateway, my mom and sister love it and they don’t listen to any country
I’d add one of the spoken word songs or whatever you wanna call them, it seems to be something he likes
