Think American heartbreak is still my favorite of his but the self titled is pretty close. But like I said before the album came out, his loosies tend to be what I listen to the most from him
Idk I think this is the best version of anything that he's tried to do. Obviously can't do it for his entire career and it's cool that he's branched out to a more polished sound, but any time I hear him do the stripped back guitar song I just wish he had the energy he has here.
Didn’t think a quote was necessary since I responded, like, immediately after you but I can edit if need be
Nine ball is probably my favorite of his songs of any period even though I forgot the name of it the other week
I didn’t get into him until self titled so while I enjoy the first 2 albums they are not what I reach for when I’m listening to him and American Heartbreak is just entirely too long. Some great songs but I’m never throwing that album on.
I love Deep Satin a lot. As for this it’s kind of more of the same. I like the horns but man he deploys them a lot lol. “Appetite”, “Say Why”, “Bad News”, “South and Pine” and “Cannonball” are first half highlights.
as a whole release, I think Boys of Faith EP is my favorite thing he's released, but every album he has ever put out has at least a handful of songs that I absolutely love and are up there with the best of his stuff. first song I ever heard of his was "Crooked Teeth" and it's still one of my favorites. top 3.
I’ll also beat the drum for “Smaller Acts” which is incredible. honestly wild how varied the S/T sounds compared to his recent output imo.
