i obviously like Jason a ton but his best songs are the ones where he is directly aping Neil and they aren't as good as the real thing
To me the best Neil Young material and the best Isbell material have almost nothing in common - Young at his best taps into universal struggles (the mythic, the archetypal, etc), Isbell thrives on excavating the horribly specific. Zach Bryan otoh has yet to impress me doing anything.
I grew up on Neil Young. My dad was somewhat of a super fan, so I think I’ll always love his music. “Thrasher” and the entire Rust Never Sleeps is one of my all-time favorite records. Southeastern is also out of this world, but there’s a ton on that record that reminds me of Neil. Isbell lost me for a few 400 Unit records but he pulled me back in with Fox in the Snow. & of course, I love Tom Petty. I guess it’s zero surprise that I love John Moreland too. I guess I don’t have anything to offer here other than Zach Bryan seems like a huge fucking baby. At this point, I’ve heard of more people distancing themselves from him, especially after having worked with him in some capacity.
getting anyone to cut you a check for $350,000,000.00 is pretty impressive tbh for real though I agree with your take about Neil Young & Jason Isbell
For reference, here’s the inciting incident, since I think some of you may have our pal @Albe on ignore and that would make this entire last page borderline incoherent. lol
I'm a massive Isbell fan, he is one of my GOATs even despite how bad the most recent album is, but in DBT I'm really partial to the Mike Cooley songs Band is loaded with talent Everyone listen to DBT
It blows my mind how underrated Cooley is. You can really see the impact Cooley had on Isbell and his song craft. The back catalog of DBT is an embarrassment of riches.
Speaking of an off brand Jason Isbell. Drayton Farley now getting involved. What's Going On Between Zach Bryan, John Moreland and Drayton Farley?, | Holler
Has anyone ever said anything positive about spending time with Zach Bryan? Genuine question. I've enjoyed the guy's music, but more and more, he just sounds like an asshole with a gigantic ego and zero maturity.
jon caramonica (sp) seems to have enjoyed profiling him but that’s all i can think of jason isbell hasn’t said anything negative but i do remember him saying something positive about the shows he played with zach
Moreland's video on IG tracks with a lot of the other stories/accusations thrown Zach's way. Especially the off-color jokes and treating people like shit.
Zach has been pretty honest from day one in his music about himself. Hes got problems, is a jersey at best, and an abuser at worst (I'm admittedly not up to date on everything his Ex says happened). I think it's not so much him getting too famous to handle it, as it is just a refusal to handle it. He had the insight into his problems in 2019 and 2020 albums, and still hasn't worked on any of those issues. But yeah, anyone I've ever heard say anything positive about him often changes their tune in a year or so. That said, I think Moreland is a bit of a jerk too and think they both look terrible in this.
I'm sure there is, and if someone who knows all of what his ex, Bri has said about him feel free to expand on it. As I said, I'm not up to date on what she has said happened to her at the hands of Zach. I'm not doubting her, just don't know what she's said and if she is claiming abuse or not.
my john moreland discography play ran almost all day. i love some of the synth stuff he incorporates in certain albums. dyk that his musical career actually started in a hardcore band? here’s a favorite from the day.
