it was tough. and also so bad that like, shes in the middle of outlining an event where abuse took place and it cuts to an ad of portnoy reading a draftkings ad piece lol.
I know that succinct isn't really Zach Bryan's brand, but I do think that this album could have benefitted greatly from trimming the fat a bit. It's long and there are sections that feel a bit like a slog to get through, but the good stuff is really good. Did a mental count today and could get this easily down to 14-ish tracks at like 45 min and it would have been all killer no filler. Good album either way, but I think it coulda used an editor to make it great
One of at least a half a dozen albums from this year that I liked a lot but also felt the need to make an edit of. Of those (others: Beyonce, Post Malone, Billy Strings, Gracie Abrams, Sam Barber, Taylor), it's definitely the one I most enjoyed playing all the way through. But there are definitely a few sections that sag a little bit with samey-sounding songs.
I probably like his new one best, Highway Prayers. All his records are pretty long and dense, so he's not the most approachable artist, but if you click with his "thing" (essentially, very jammy and technically impressive bluegrass) you'll find lots to love. I do know some people who struggled with his studio albums and then clicked with his Live Vol. 1 album, so worth keeping that in mind.
Highway Prayers is great, solidly in my top five of the year. I recommend starting there, but Home and Renewal are also good entry points. Both albums start with runs of some of his best songs. I also recommend checking out his live material on YouTube since he's one of those artists whose live show is an experience.
we were - maybe a month or two ago, it was only links to youtube videos of the entire show recording.
I think the Revival from this live album was at my show, so that's cool. But yeah, never even got a link to the YouTube videos.
I hope in Oak Island you can hear the person sitting right fucking next to me who was taking phone calls during the show
