@Craig Manning id absolutely recommend Haley Heynderickx - I Need to Start A Garden if you haven’t already heard it. Gorgeous folk/singer-songwriter stuff.

 

I don't know if I've seen it mentioned in any lists so far, but Unbreakable by Janet Jackson was a triumph. Perhaps one of the best "comeback" albums I can think of. Highly recommended.

This is my list as it stands now, could probably tinker with it for another year and still not be totally happy with it. Should have restrained myself to less than 100, apologies. Feel free to just scroll past it. Will probably do top songs at some point in the next week but that seems like a daunting task. Might add some brief write-ups about my top 10-20 at some point in the next few days depending on how much time I have.

I tried to make this list both a reflection of what I've listened to in the last ten years as well as what I think will stick around in my listening habits going forward. Because of that, some records are not on this list that I certainly listened to a lot in the past decade, because they are by artists Pinegrove, Ryan Adams, Brand New, Drake, etc. that I have zero interest in listening to or supporting anymore because of how they have treated women.

I've just never vibed with The Wild Hunt quite as much and most of his stuff since then hasn't done much for me. I think TNLN was a "right album at the right time" kind of deal for me summer of 2012

Here's my list. This thread has given me about 10 albums to check out that I hadn't heard of before. Also i guess I should give bon iver and the national another try - maybe I'm missing something....

1. Pianos become the teeth - Keep You (wait for love would be top 20). Just a perfect album. PBTT took a new direction with their sound (no screaming and less hardcore guitars) and they created a nuanced brooding yet hooky album about grief.

2. Moving Mountains - Moving Mountains. This was so close to number one. To me this album sounds like autumn/fall. When I hear the opening drum and guitar strum on the opener swingset, I feel a wave of calm wash over me, like a deep exhale. They manage to create a cohesive mood yet it's never interesting.

3. Thursday - No Devolucion. My favourite band of all time with their final album. Another band taking their sound and taking it in a completely different direction. There are industrial elements (a gun in the first act) sparse/intimate moments (empty glass) and Thursday at their best creating swirling dreamscape melodies (the breakdown in turnpike divides).
