1) Phantom - I don't think either of these are particular strong songs, but Quiet Down is probably my least favorite if I had to choose one. Phantom is pretty unique for them. 2) Descensus - Man come on. I love Nesting Dolls, but Descensus is unreal, and is really out there compared to other Circa. also listening to it again recently made me realize Yip REALLY adds his magic to the shimmery guitars in the outro. Very reminiscent of Title Fight's tones in Hyperview.
Descensus is a very “Sumerian” song, if that makes sense. That bass and the almost djent style to it. Very unique song for them.
That's an interesting point. I wonder if they felt more free to write something heavier? Hopefully they didn't feel pressure from Sumerian. I feel like Sumerian knew what they were getting when they signed them though.
I mean they are the least heavy band on the roster but I’m sure they were growing way too big for EVR. But I’m sure the label may have pushed them to go a little heavier.
BSN moved them from EVR to Atlantic, and there was a HUGE push for a more commercial sounding album. VW was independently released.
Jesus fuck the first-round matchups are going to give me an aneurism. Phantom Nesting Dolls Descensus is probably my number two on the album, but Nesting Dolls is just such a hauntingly beautiful song both on its own and in the context of the album. The songs leading up to it are all fast, heavy and at times trippy. Then you get to Nesting Dolls and it's this quiet, pensive track that tears your heart out. And I've talked about it before but the way it builds and builds towards the ending but never gives you that satisfying breakdown is just perfection.
VW was independent when it came out. I’m like 99% positive that Sumerian got the rights when they signed on for descensus.
Yeah I think them and Hopeless at different points have had rights to their back catalog. I promise that it was independent though. My vinyl copy doesn't have any reference to a record label.
theyve actually said in an interview that they signed to Sumerian wayyy after they recorded that album I do agree with you that I do hear a bit of those sorta tones in that album though. it’s bass forward crunch, tuned drum kit, and axe fx sounding guitars. Different frequencies for them - I think it’s really unpleasant.
for a brief second my dumb morning brain saw we were voting for only two matchups and i was like damn i cant believe THESE are the songs that made it through for this album lol i need more coffee
