On Letting Go is still their masterwork and is a top ten album of all time for me. Easily ranks #1 of their dsicography.
I legitimately think The Amulet is my favorite album of theirs front to back... Until I hit play on OLG and hear, "IT STARTS OUT LIKE A SEASON IN REVERSE!"
OLG is definitely my favorite of theirs, BSN and Juturna constantly battling it out for the second spot, but the first 3 albums are easily the top 3 for me. IMO there was a huge drop-off until the Amulet sorta brought it back.
Always felt like an outlier on OLG haha. It’s the only record of theirs that actually does very little for me. Has a few tracks I love though
In The Morning & The Greatest Lie don't really do much for me. Same. There are some tracks on it that I love, but close to half of it just kind of washes over me.
Living Together is my favorite Circa song, but Your Friends is prob their most impressive achievement. The melodic idea is so creative and out of left field for them, yet everything else is quintessential early (best) Circa.
Congratulations. Go home now . . . I'm with both of you on this. It starts off strong and then falls off real hard for me.
I think OLG may be the most hurt by production, too. Is that unpopular? It’s like one of most McTernan-y sounding records I can think of and not in a good way. I could see a case being made for Violent Waves too though, but even there it’s more just inconsistent than anything
It's hard to say because they've never had a well produced album, but OLG's production definitely doesn't do justice to the timeless material they had.
I totally agree with this. With the exception of Semi-Constructive Criticism. That's the one song on the album which I think just sounds exactly like it was always meant to.
Woah that’s a take! How do you feel about BSN’s production? Always thought most people agreed on that one sounding really good, if not only faulting it for not really “fitting” Circa
McTernan has worked on some of my all time favorites, and while they don't have a lot of low end, he's gotta be doing something right. B&C's Separation, Juturna and OLG, and Fireworks' Gospel. I also think Descensus has a fantastic opener and closer, while being my 2nd least favorite overall. VW has great production, but the performance/songwriting was lacking. The Lottery might be the perfect "sounding" Circa song IMO. I think Yip did a great job on Amulet, a good recovery from an exhausting style on Descensus.
It sounds really maxed out at points, and everything muddies up because of it. Is it the only that got the vinyl remaster or did Juturna and OLG get the same treatment for the reissues?
I thiiiink just BSN? Only going off Spotify and Discogs, but both platforms only advertise that one as remastered
Oh and re: the production, yeah I see (hear?) what you mean. It’s definitely their loudest album no question, so that compression on the mix really shows
