Southern Air is just so good as a whole. Listening to it today and it really is just incredible the whole way through. A peak summer album. I go back and forth on my favorite from them but many days it's this.
Band doesn’t have a bad opener. All range from great to incredible. Better Days continuing that trend.
I love seeing fans of Lights and Sounds in here, I feel like a lot of people didn't dig that album and it's my favorite from them by a large margin
WYTTSY has both their best opener and closer Paper Walls has their best 3-song run (You and Me —> Cut Me Mick —> Paper Walls)
Why are you singling Paper Walls out here? Just curious Southern Air is their best sequenced, and Lights and Sounds is their “worst” but that’s one of the things that separated this band from others. They know how to keep their core sound in tact, but center everything around something that makes the collection sticks out in their discography (Paper Walls - Mendez’ riffage, Orchestration/Synths LaS, etc.) which makes the sequencing great
Yellowcard and Jimmy Eat World may have a case for the strongest discographies in the scene. (Odd ones where their debuts pale in comparison to what came after)
The Takedown Way Away/Awakening The Sound of You and Me Three Flights Up/Star Struck Convocation Rest in Peace Right now, Better Days is neck and neck with TSOYAM, but I’ll know more when I hear the whole record. But my top 3 will be nearly impossible to change.
Paper Walls came out when I was 17 where I was less invested in music for a year or two, randomly. That scene was also fading around then but in hindsight it was almost the perfect Yellowcard album. Blended the best parts of OA and L&S in my opinion. Probably my favourite overall album. Seen them as often as I could in Scotland from the SA tour, Lift a Sail tour, farewell tour and then their best show to date last November. (Oddly followed by JEW the next night) They are also the rare band that gets me watching music videos. Always fun. So glad their OA riot fest turned into an EP, touring and album.
So OA was my favorite album when it was released. I then fell off YC completely for YEARS. Started digging into them a few years ago through discog runs. L&S did nothing for me, with the others being reallllly good.bit may have been my least favorite after OA. I loved WYTTSY, Southern Air was my favorite. LaS was pretty interesting with some amazing highs, and s/t was meh for me. My question: was L&S like THE shit when it came out? I just missed that boat and wonder what the sentiment was at the time.
I think it’s more appreciated now than it was at the time. It was darker, not as fun/sunny as OA was. Has some great songs on it, but I prefer the other 2 of the big 3.
