it took me a while to even realize what the PW artwork even was. For some reason I thought it was like, a flight of stairs with lights beside it the first time I saw it lol.
One cool thing I saw mentioned once about WYTTSY is that the art can sorta be interpreted as coming upon the city that was in the distance on the cover of PW.
First thing i thought of when they released it. I also thought the back of PW art was cool with the houses all burned to the ground.
This would be a fun game. If I had to cut WYDTSY down to an Ep I'd go: Sound of You and Me For You and Your Denial Life of Leaving Home Soundtrack See Me Smiling Be The Young Don't think anyone would argue Southern Air blows anything else out of the water ☺
See Me Smiling and Be the Young are definitely two of my least favorite YC songs haha. Others are good picks though. I guess I'd put Denial on mine too.
Here's the rest if we lived in a world where YC only released EPs. Ocean Ave: Way Away Breathing Ocean Ave Empty Apts Only One Back Home Lights and Sounds: Lights and Sounds Down on My Head Rough Landing Holly Waiting Game How I Go Hollywood Died Paper Walls: The Takedown Keeper When Five Becomes Four Cut Me Mick You and Me and One Spotlight Paperwalls Southern Air: Awakening Surface of the Sun Always Summer Sleep in the Snow Rivertown Blues Southern Air Lift a Sail: Transmission Home Crash the Gates One Bedroom Illuminate Deepest Well Lift a Sail
Ooh I want to play Ocean Avenue Miles Apart Inside Out One Year, Six Months Back Home Three Flights Down Rough Landing, Holly Space Travel How I Go Holly Wood Died The Takedown Shadows and Regrets Afraid You and Me and One Spotlight Cut Me, Mick Awakening Sleep in the Snow Telescope Rivertown Blues Southern Air Convocation Fragile and Dear Madrid Lift a Sail MSK California I tried to hold myself to only five songs per EP, with the exception of LaS where I wanted to tack on the intro. Paper Walls was damn impossible.
Listening to Lift a Sail right now, I might give this record more flak than it deserves. Granted, I have to skip Make Me So and One Bedroom as I find both of those songs fairly grating, but otherwise there is some great and unique stuff on this record. Transmission Home, Crash the Gates, and The Deepest Well all bring that expected Yellowcard energy to the table. Fragile and Dear, Illuminate, and Lift a Sail explore some new places for the band that I think work really well with the lyrical content and theme of the record. Lift a Sail should have been the lead single for this record, it's clearly the best song on the record. Why they have it buried in weirdly near the end of the track listing, or didn't push it harder as a representation of the sound of the album, I have absolutely no idea. Regardless, I'm glad we have it. One of my favorite Yellowcard songs. Madrid, Msk, and California really go in new directions and just add some unique sounds and variety to the record. Msk especially is a favorite of mine. Going to miss these guys so damn much.
All really good! An EP is 6 songs or less, right? or did I mess this up? If only YC would take our EPs list and just make that their set list for this final tour.....
The breakup announcement finally gave me the push I needed to dive into the YC discography. Their earlier records didn't grab me much on the first run-through, but I just got to Paper Walls and holy hell, what a great record. It's really blowing me away on first listen. I will be coming back to this one for sure.
Today is going to be Yellowcard day for me. I'll be doing this again when the album drops. Sometimes I tend to forget just how terrific their songs are.
I hate that I can't get over LP being gone. It's always something missing in the new songs. Like the new track a lot though, but I'm actually glad now this is their last record.
They added a second show in Orlando, playing Ocean Avenue in it's entirety. If only it weren't the day before Thanksgiving.
LP was at most only ever the third most important component of the Yellowcard sound, and the Yellowcard sound has changed since he left.
