The thing with lights and sounds is that ranked in their discography it's not up there with southern air, ocean ave or paperwalls, but that doesn't mean it's a bad album. I'm not sure why they need to be compared, it's a great album.
Lights and sounds features some of my all time favorites like Hollywood Died, Down on my Head, L&S, How I Go, Rough Landing, Waiting Game but then it has forgettable tracks like a city of Devils, Words Hands Hearts, Space Travel, Two Weeks From Twenty. In my book it keeps it a good album but not at the top of their game.
I only bring it up so much since I'm still so puzzled and kinda frustrated that I can't like really any part of it. It's not like it's just a unanimous dud, obviously there are people that love that album, so I wish I could see it in the same way.
I saw the Lights and Sounds tour live in 2005. Was pretty epic hearing Sure Thing Falling and Holly Wood Died live. They also played Avondale, Cigarette and October Nights
fuck i would kill to hear l&s deep cuts live. i've only heard holly wood died, rough landing holly, and the title track i think. would die if i ever heard two weeks from twenty or space travel or how i go ugh
Both Holly songs as well as How I Go are so fucking good. I just heard the live version of How I Go featuring Katy Perry for the first time in a while.
OFTK is probably like the first piece of music I ever listened to, and I was 6 or 7 when I heard it. I think that's why YC and OFTK hold such a special place in my heart.
I have never had an issue with L&S, except "Two Weeks From Twenty" and "How I Go," which are awful (IMO). I'd rank it low on my list simply b/c the rest of their discography is much stronger.
How can you hate city of devils? The lyrics are incredible, the string composition is amazing. Every note of that song is so perfectly crafted. Listen to the orchestration on the back end of that track. How anybody could hate that song blows my damn mind.
Agreed. That being said I still stand by my opinion that L&S holds some of their best musical composition and lyrics.
For the same reason I don't like any of the album really, I don't think it has good melodies and think Ryan's voice sounds bad.
A lot of L&S could be my least favorite YC song, but I'd also throw in View from Heaven and See Me Smiling.
a vicious kind has some of the worst melodic phrasing i've ever heard, lol. it doesn't make sense on a sonic level, those progressions just sound bad
I dunno about all that. But to be fair I've never listened to a song and noticed it's melodic phrasing or sonic level.
If any thing I think "Awakening" is the worst song on SA, if only because I don't care for the lyrics much. Otherwise it's perfect
