Been a while since I've kept up with these guys. Discog run is in order. What's our chance of getting new music?

Look, I’ll be happy if they come back but why do bands even break up anymore? Lol

Mental health. Prioritizing family. Hearts aren’t in it at that time. I’m sure there are plenty of legit reasons.

This. We have no idea what goes on behind the scenes especially after being on the road for essentially 20 years straight

Just don’t announce a band is done. Hiatus,
Maybe they are rereleasing their Michelle Branch cover?

Seriously though…bands don’t have to announce big break ups anymore. Hiatus or saying no future plans at the time. Just no more “it’s over”. I went to face to face “only goodbye tour” years ago and they’ve released like 4+ albums since. Thankfully.

Personally I thought their farewell tour was awesome and i’m glad they did of all that exactly the way that they did. Great memories and at the time I was ready to fully accept that was the end. I respect that they thought it was over and wanted to give the fans a last chance to be there - which is incredibly closing in on 6 years ago now.

That being said, I was also so stoked about Riot Fest and the idea that they’re back. I’m grateful that I got both experiences, to be honest. Sign me up for whatever they’ve got coming.

I do get having a “final tour” per say as a potential send off and maybe they will never record anything new again…but they did come back from 2 hiatus now. So just acknowledging the point that “why do bands break up anymore?” kind of has a point.

I’m actually foolishly optimistic enough to hope YC records something again, even if it’s just a one off single or something special. Plus there is still the possibility of those YC/Hammock alt versions to hope comes out that WRK had mentioned

This is kind of dumb, IMO.

If a band says hiatus instead of breakup, invariably people will start asking when the hiatus is over. Which they might do anyway, but there's no reason a band should have to invite that line of questioning deliberately, especially if at the time a return seems impossible.

I think fans should just learn to accept that band members are people just like anyone and reserve the right to change their minds for the sake of their own happiness, and shouldn't have to worry about whether their fans see a "breakup-reunion" cycle as some weird betrayal of their trust or some equally selfish line of reasoning.

It really doesn’t have a point. Life happens. All members may agree they need to break up. Then life happens and they all agree it feels right to pick things back up. There is nothing wrong with that, no matter how long the break is.

A band like Thrice went on hiatus. Members went their own ways and did their own thing. I’m sure some people asked them if the band would ever be back. They got to live their lives and decided to come back on their own terms to a fanbase more than excited to have them back. Gaslight Anthem is in the process of doing the same. And some hiatus bands won’t come back or take years, but pausing gives bands time for evaluation and it doesn’t attract the drama of a break up. And we’ve seen bands come back that have been inactive for years.

It wasn’t my original point, but in 2022 and seeing the trends in the music and entertainment industry I do think it’s reasonable for bands to think anything is possible and not just break up.

Again, just an opinion as well. I don’t think never say never seems unreasonable in a world where Queen replaced Freddie years after his passing and the Mark/Tom/Travis are back as Blink yet again. People being people means bands can be less definitive

I don't want to insult anyone, but it's mind-blowingly selfish to me to think bands should take their word choice into consideration when announcing personal developments that derail their careers on the off chance it all blows over a few years down the line. Like, such a really weird hill to die on.

Sorry, but none of that is relevant. Bands can call whatever they’re doing whatever they want to. It’s their decision. Our opinions don’t matter. They can call it whatever and it does not matter to us.

    This is so so stupid.

The only thing that bothers me about bands announcing they're done only to reunite later is a lot of times those "farewell" tickets get bought and resold and people are paying much more, and in some cases rearranging their lives/traveling, to see them once last time, only to have several more opportunities in 2 years.

I know bands arent using it as a cash grab, but something about it feels that way. All that being said, if my favorite band announces a hiatus, I'll always be waiting on news. If they announce a break up, the door is closed and everyone moves on. I get it.

As long as it’s a good show, who cares? I saw Anberlin’s “final performance.” Now I’ve seen them play this year. So, what? If you believe the bands aren’t doing anything malicious? What’s the issue with how they title their status?

Being annoyed at people who resell tickets at higher prices? Sure. Fuck those people. No one forces people to go to shows. If people travel and rearrange life stuff, that’s on them. As long as they enjoy the show? Who cares?

    This is still stupid.

Sometimes I feel like we have arguments just for the sake of having arguments. If the band wants to break up after 20 years of touring and recording, and they take the time to do it in a way that all fans across the world can have a chance to enjoy, we should appreciate that. This isn’t really that complicated.

I also feel like the “bands shouldn’t announce breakups” comes off with a sense of entitlement. These guys have worked for 20 years to produce consistent quality music and played shows on several continents touring year after year after year. Who are we to say they can’t announce a breakup and then come back, especially when it’s done in such a thoughtful manner?

Anyway, moving on from this dumb argument…

Tl;dr - Happy they are back, grateful for what they bring, would support them if they broke up 3 more times and came back 3 more times after that.

But you didn't see Anberlin's "final performance." You can't tell people that. You paid more money to see what was supposed to be their final performance. Maybe people paid a whole lot more to see them one last time because it was marketed as their final performance only to have the band play in their hometown 1 year later. I can understand the mild frustration in that for people who are strapped for cash.

Things change - I get it, I'm not suggesting bands do anything different. But I see both sides to this, especially when bands have 3-4 "farewell" tours. It just gets silly.

Also, not everyone who disagrees with you is stupid. I am. But I wouldn't recommend using that as a hard and fast rule.

I have no inside information but my opinion is that it’s unlikely. That being said, I did a discog run recently too and I can’t get over how good that run is from Paper Walls into Southern Air. Such quality stuff.

I also find myself appreciating Lift a Sail more as time goes on. It’s a little off my main path sonically but I some of these songs are really masterpieces.
