I remember being pretty disappointed with WYTTSY - especially with all the hype of them returning. I never really gave their final three albums much of a shot after that. Should probably change that.
I tended to underrate WYTTSY for years because Southern Air came out so soon after it and was even better. Revisiting that album last spring for the 10-year reminded me how stacked it is with great songs.
Excellent point. The one major difference difference though is there career path post Yellowcard and Gaslight. Brian kept going musically solo, and Ryan has done a few musical projects too, but got into producing for a bit, his Stars Wars podcast and wants to score. Ryan also talked about the medical impact singing in Yellowcard’s style. I guess band member status is a big factor too. So happy the guys in TGA are back and I really do wish YC could be back. Edit: Just saw they may be playing shows together. Hope it leads to something in the way of new music
The Sound of You and Me as an opener and Be The Young as a closer is incredible already. I still can’t believe With You Around didn’t blow up
Just the thought of seeing these guys on stage again is so exciting. Whatever happens from here on out, i’m happy to support and respect. But man is it great to have these guys back and playing shows again.
Big fan of WYTTSY and Southern Air. So impressed that they came back going full out and carried that positive momentum in making another record so quickly right on or. Although I like Lift A Sail, another record in the vein of those two would have been amazing. I do miss Lp’s drums as the band moved forward. Lift A Sail is very pretty and feels very personal in a different way. It’s feels like a “love letter” and not that it was a side project, but it felt like it could been, even if it’s was the same guys.
Spun this the other day, love the back to back of Transmission Home and Crash the Gates. I also love Make Me So, which I feel many disliked. Some of the slower songs are beautiful too.
Do you have a favorite off of Lift a Sail, Jason? That violin solo on Fragile & Dear with those drums is right up there for me along with the mandolin solo in Fields & Fences as some of my favorite moments from this band. Transmission Home is still so damn good.
I know this is tired but this band minus LP just didn’t hit the same for me. Nonetheless I welcome their return!
Three unique elements that I loved with this band was Ryan’s voice/lyrics, Sean’s violin added so so much to the songs and make the different in the genre and LP’s drum style.
I generally thought the drums on their last two records were good, but Jimmy Brunkvist absolutely blew me away when he played with them on their last tour. If they ever record new songs he would be a sick addition. He is an incredible drummer
I didn't particularly care for the drums on Lift a Sail, which surprised me considering that Nate Young is generally considered to be a well-regarded drummer, but thought they were much better on the self-titled, so I realized that it was more of a stylistic choice rather than any lack of ability (although I still assume LP would have added a bit more flair to the drums on LaS had he been there). But I definitely that Jimmy did an incredible job on the last tour. I think it was the first time seeing them that I didn't notice LP's absence with the drums
Agreed on all. All of this conversation is getting me so excited to see them live and reminding me how consistently amazing their shows are. I can’t believe we will have the opportunity to see them perform again.
It’s very good but Breathing and Lights and Sounds both just hit a sweet spot for me that cannot be topped.
Hard agree on Fragile & Dear. The bridge to the outro of that song is a top 5 moment for me in their discography
