Lately i’ve convinced myself these guys will play another show one day. So i’m riding with that idea moving forward. Thanks for coming to my ted talk.
I kind of get the sense it’s over in a chapter closed kind of way. I think my hope is that Ryan does a project again that I’m more into. The Edm/Jedha/Maker stuff is not for me, but I’m glad he’s happy. I’d love another band where he does vocals or more acoustic solo albums (which were probably easier on his voice) that can limited to studio only projects. It’d be nice for them to empty the vault on any other music they have, and I do believe he was working some YC affiliate stuff with Hammock. I really do miss this band having new music. I think the hiatus and return already felt like a gift, because they left way too early after Paper Walls. Love the optimism though, and maybe you’ll Be right that there a one off show or a couple days they kind of get back together for old sake.
agree with this 100%. WYTTSY sounds so similar to SA. i might even like it a touch better than SA, although theyre both really good. never could get into Lift a Sail or s/t though.
LAS and S/T almost do feel like a slightly different project. I’ve always loved LP’s drumming, and not having it feature heavily on a YC makes it feels different. There are definitely more atmospheric elements, and although I do enjoy those records, I don’t have them in the same plane as OA through SA.
Everything from Ocean Avenue through Ocean Avenue Acoustic is fantastic. Such a killer run, and even more impressive considering the band member changes and hiatus.
Those full album acoustics are really neat. Wish they could have done even more of the records that way.
I’ll never get over this band making a pair of records as good and as fresh as those last two, and the fan base just collectively going “Nah!” I know @Jason Tate and I discussed these frustrations a lot back in the day, and they are still frustrating to me now!
These last two remain my favorite albums. Life A Sail in particular has a vibe that I still haven't heard in any other bands from the scene, unless I have been missing out on something similar.
Lift a Sail and Self-Titled both have some gems, but I just don’t go back to them like the aforementioned run. “Fields & Fences” was a pretty spectacular way to go out.
I don’t think everyone was Nah. They chose to make a musical shift, and that came after Southern Air (and WYTTSY) received a lot of praise after coming back. You gotta respect they had an idea and went for it. They also had another critical long term member of the band have an exit that wasn’t on good terms between albums. I really enjoy LP’s drum style. Both of their last two records are good in my opinion, but it feels like a slightly different band and approach in production. I don’t crave those last two records as much the OA to SA run. Definitely some great songs, but you can really feel the start of Ryan’s atmospheric influence starting with LaS. Some people just are as big on that.
How do people feel about Ryan’s acoustic EP’s? There’s no stand out specific song or moment for me, but I really really enjoy them and listen to them front to back. I hope in time he does another.
They peaked with the pop punk sound on Southern Air. Another album like that would've been boring. LaS and S/T both feature their best moments IMO too.
Never really saw SA as an unmatchable peak. I base that on OA, SA, WYTTSY also being awesome. I think LAS I right up there too. It’s really cool that Lift a Sail and S/T are top of the mountain for some people. Justifies the decision to go a new direction for those albums. I think the love of some many different albums by this band is why people miss them.
I like them both. I listen to them quite often. I hope he continues to expand on that folksy sound with some other elements thrown in. I think he really excels in that overall space.
I could see that. Maybe Atmospheric and ambient undertones with the acoustic stuff.I don’t love the edm, thing although I tried, but there’s probably room in the fanbase for those who love one or another or both, if he has time.
Dying at this video, "we've really been having fun playing this new song", also Sean's violin solo at the end is just complete chaos. So fun
lol, I just discovered this short film from 2009 featuring WRK and Patrick Stump. You can watch the full thing: Moustachette | IMDb Moustachette (Short 2009) - IMDb
Damn, Ryan and Josh were both on stage playing Ocean Avenue with some members of NFG at Emo Nite tonight. Bummed I missed it
Mendez and Josh also tweeted this exact same thing a few minutes ago. Curious what this is about considering Josh isn't part of Jedha and Mendez doesn't usually do the Emo Night/WRK stuff
