So I just listened to the self-titled all the way through for the first time in a couple years, and I think my view is that for me there’s a great collection of songs in here hindered a bit by the production. To me it really sounds like every member of the band took their own musical tastes to extremes at the same time. Ryan Key went Nashville (sunny vocals with occasional folk/country twang), Ryan Mendez and Josh went metal (dark shreddy Drop C guitars, super high gain), and Sean went orchestral. They’re all interesting ideas on their own, but blended together it doesn’t really feel like a Yellowcard album to me. In that sense I actually think this album misses Neal Avron way more than LP. I suppose the other way to look at it is that they made their final record exactly what each of them wanted it to be, and I’m glad they got to go out on their own terms. I actually like the album. It just doesn’t sound like a Yellowcard album to me, at least not a traditional one.
I know this is an old post, but man, Yahoo Screen had some cool performances for a bit there. I remember TBS performed Happiness Is on there. Gonna have to track that one down again
Has Ryan's content output been worthwhile to subscribe to his patreon? I absolutely loved his two EPs that he released a couple years ago now and its a bummer that it appears he's not going to release anymore?
Well yeah but he posts clips and updates about his songs on his social media accounts all the time. So to say that it “appears he’s not going to release any more” is not true because he’s consistently released music it’s just not in a format you (or I) would prefer.
I hope there are still more wide releases from Ryan. I get the Patreon thing from a band/artist perspective. Even we have to wait a bit I hope that some of that material gets accumulated for the masses.
That’s a lot of info. Looking forward to WRK EP 3. Hope the Jimmy Eat World Work Cover is part of this. Looking forward to new whatever 2 Ryan’s cam up with and I hope there is a wide release for the alt versions of the Yellowcard songs. I don’t think I’ll be spending lots of time on twitch because time can be hard to come by, but I hope it works well.
Damn that’s a lot. Huge get working with the guys from Hammock. Not quite sure what to expect from that. I wonder if anything from the Big If days will come out in this period?
Kellin Quinn and Ryan Key join forces with kids’ author in new band, The First Rock Band On Mars — Kerrang!
I hope these guys do a reunion at some stage. Had the opportunity to see them twice but it never worked out.
Damn Ocean Avenue (song) in Dolby Atmos/Spacial on Apple Music sounds pretty damn great. The violin in the chorus.
Its fascinating to see peoples reactions to listening to lossless for the first time. Once you make the jump its impossible to go back!
Shouldn’t matter according to their white sheet: “Apple Music’s spatial audio works on: All headphones and earbuds The loudspeakers on supported iPhones, iPads, and Macs Apple TV 4K If you set Dolby Atmos to “always on” in settings for the Music app, you’ll see a pop-up advising that it probably won’t sound right on all speakers, but Apple Music will still play the spatial audio mix if that’s your preference. In fact, Apple clearly states that you can “listen on any headphones” to Apple Music’s spatial audio.”
Can’t believe it has been five years now since they announced their breakup. Time really flies, man. Damn.
