Firing or squeezing out LP was definitely the dumbest thing they could have done. He brought so much to the table.
It was definitely not an amicable split. I’d never be able to find it now but LP’s dad put a lot of shit on blast on his Facebook after it all went down that was never stated by either party. Who knows if what he said was true but it was very unfriendly..lol.
To me, the three distinct things of Yellowcard was Sean’s Violin, LP’s drumming and Ryan’s voice. The band’s sound changed once you lost any of those elements. They managed guitarist/bass/tone changes fine. That’s not to say Lift A Sail and Self Titled weren’t good. They just felt like a transition to the end of the band/WRK solo. Also, there was a producer mentoring experience from Neal to Ryan K/Ryan M I believe. There was definitely a lot of drama/member changes but the good so gas never stopped until they called it a day.
I never felt like Lift A Sail or S/T were lacking in the drumming department. I can't imagine them being that different if LP had stayed.
I too would be interested to see this Facebook post. Oh and the last two records were a flop in my eyes. Part of that flop, aside from the direction, was the absence of LP.
I have no idea if the posts are still up or if they're deleted. It was a long time ago. There's a pretty good case the lyricism on their final two albums is their best, or at least up their with the best. Both are very good albums which have aged very well, Lift A Sail especially.
Hardcore disagree but LAS is most likely my favorite YC record so.... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ S/T had a few good songs but was ultimately forgettable as hell IMO. Definitely felt like the band went out on a whimper. At least, for me it did. Edit: I read this as Lights and Sounds. Whoops! Yeah, the final record was better than Lift a Sail. I hated that record lol
S/T is very close to being my favorite YC album at this point. Probably would still put Paper Walls at the top, but there's also a ton of nostalgia with that.
I feel like the violin parts felt different on the last two records. They are definitely more prominent is the slower songs like MSK, but the faster songs seem more guitar riff driven than a balance of violin and guitar driven. I could see this easily happening if writing process changed, and certain people weren’t present at certain points. I don’t dislike any album since Ryan joined the band, but I prefer the Ocean Ave to Southern Air run stylistically.
WYTTSY Southern Air Ocean Avenue Paper Walls Lights and Sounds Self-titled Lift a Sail One for the Kids
More of a tiered ranking, with albums in each tier being pretty much equal to me: Paper Walls S/T Southern Air Lights & Sounds Lift A Sail Ocean Avenue WYTTSY One For The Kids
Oh here we go... Lights and Sounds > When You’re Through Thinking.. > Southern Air > Ocean Avenue > Paper Walls > S/T > One For The Kids > Lift A Sail > Where We Stand Not a popular take but hey.. it is what it is.
