That song could've truly exploded in the chorus and it still drives me kind of crazy that the chorus pulls back a bit instead of going off.
I wonder what kind of music these guys would be making nowadays if they were still together or made another record
Mostly true. I do think there's still definitely a market for that type of music, it's just somewhat small and co-located within that alternative, Hopeless Records type scene. With that being said, Yellowcard came back after WYTTSY and released a Top 10 billboard record with Southern Air, which still blows my mind.
I think their music would be much more in the vein of their last record, though. They were finding a bit of a groove with those mid tempo rock songs and starting to add some of their classic flare to them at the same time.
Never got around to hearing Lift a Sail but I feel like Lights and Sounds isn't that hot a take. It's the album I return to the most
Heh I just thought Southern Air was hot garbage so I stopped caring to listen to their new stuff after getting back together, but if it's a big improvement then I'll have to check it out
I'll bite Ocean Avenue > Southern Air > Paper Walls > WYTT,SY > One For The Kids > Lights and Sounds > Lift A Sail > Yellowcard > Where We Stand
Ocean Avenue (It's early 00's pop punk with huge choruses which doesn't feel dated at all, which is an immense credit to the songwriting). Paper Walls Southern Air WYTTSY Yellowcard Lights and Sounds (I find it really interesting how there's a lot of people who consider this a top 3 album - FTR, I don't think it's a bad record by any stretch) One For the Kids The top 3 are all elite records.
I knew my list looked weird for some reason. Updated Ocean Avenue Paper Walls Southern Air Lift A Sail WYTTSY Yellowcard Lights and Sounds One For the Kids
Southern air. Ocean avenue. Paper walls. Wyttsy. Yellowcard. One for the kids. Lights and sounds. Huge gap......lift a sail
Fwiw I had the same thought when it came out. It felt like the band was just running in place in a time when I wanted something fresh from them. After a few years I really came around to it though — I still think there are a couple of pretty overrated YC tracks on there but the highs are some of their career peaks. Definitely revisit it!
Tbh I feel like the self titled missed the mark for me. Felt like a weak way to go out for a band that has an amazing career output.
Absolutely, even though the fall isn’t the best time to listen to it. Some of Ryan’s best choruses and melodies are on there, but it can seem a tad bit oversaturated with “happy” sounding stuff if you’re not in the mood for it
you know, I’ve always enjoyed the album but I do agree with you. Theres something off about it with me. I REALLY like some songs off it but for some reason the album just doesn’t fully stick with me. I’ll have to give it another go here soon.
Still love self-titled. Really felt like they perfected the more alt-rock sound they were going for on Lift a Sail. The string arrangements on most pf those songs are beautiful and it's a pretty diverse album musically. Very close to my favorite from them
Self-titled definitely felt like a bummer of an ending to me, I truly hate What Appears, Got Yours and The Hurt is Gone, and I think that Rest in Peace and Wrecking Ball are the only songs which I actually like a lot.
