Awakening is sonically and thematically a fantastic opener, but musically just does not stand out enough. It's the kind of song I listen to and go "yep, it's a Yellowcard song", instead of "wow, what a great Yellowcard song". Not that I actively dislike it but the overwhelming love it's always gotten feels unwarranted imo. I'm sure people feel the same about my faves, so different strokes!
Edit: My intention here is not to be a dick or anything..I’ve just been interacting with fans this band online for over a decade and I’ve literally never heard this sentiment..which I guess is one of those cool things about music haha
Both their openers and closers are hit or miss for me, though I think they have a better track record with closers. Imo their only terrific openers are The Sound of You and Me and Rest In Peace.
Curious if you consider Three Flights Up and Convocation to be openers, or Lights and Sounds and Transmission Home? Or maybe the one-two punch to be the whole opener?
I personally think they have a pretty good track record as far as openers go. "The Sound of You and Me" and "Convocation/Transmission Home" being my personal favorites
I know it's way past the 24 hours, but I'll close this round out (and probably break the tie) tomorrow morning. I mean, this morning, since it's already 3:30 AM here.
So, looks like I have a tie to break. I have just relistened to both tracks to make my decision. Awakening is a song I loved when the album came out, but now it has fallen down my ranking and I actually think it's overrated now. On the other hand, Rivertown Blues is gold (that sweet guitar solo at the end!) so I have to go with that. Final scores: Rivertown Blues - (13) Awakening - 12 Always Summer - 10 Southern Air - 14 A Vicious Kind - 5 Surface of the Sun - 19 Sleep in the Snow - 21 Here I Am Alive - 3 Next Round: Rivertown Blues Vs. Southern Air Surface of the Sun Vs. Sleep in the Snow Oh and by the way: REPORTED
Uh, Yellowcard always has great album openers. Can't see how anyone would think otherwise. Southern Air Sleep in the Snow
Rivertown Blues Surface of the Sun Super surprised Surface made it so far. It's a personal favorite so not complaining, just didnt know it was so liked
Probably the 4 best songs on the album, in my opinion. Kind of hurts picking between them but: Rivertown Blues Surface of the Suface
Southern Air Sleep In The Snow These are two of my top four on the album along with Awakening and Always Summer.
Yellowcard doesn’t have great album openers. Can’t see how anyone would think otherwise. See, I can do that too.
Aw come on man, you know better. You can't be salty when you know what you're saying is a hot take. I know when I say something unpopular, I expect a backlash. Lighten up.
