Yeah A Vicious Kind is unquestionably my least favorite song on the record. Rivertown and Telescope are my top, so hoping the former fares better against Awakening hah
I understand the personal significance of it and I know that obviously it has a part on this record for the people who wrote the record. But "Ten" to me just totally screws up the flow of the album. And then to go between that an Rivertown is way too jarring. Just not a fan of the song being on that tracklist or being where it is on the tracklist.
An acoustic song being the penultimate track definitely makes sense to me, almost especially following a storm of a song like Rivertown. To each their own on that though! Idk prior to this record, YC did not really have many songs like this that were just strictly acoustic. I'm actually surprised it's not getting more votes based sheerly on its unique place in the band's discography up until that point, not to mention the insane amount of vulnerability Ryan welcomed by writing it. That Star Wars line makes me tear up like not many other songs do. I get that it's not really the sonic landscape that people go to YC for though.
here i am alive and southern air are the clear low points for me, though i do like both. sun, snow, vicious, and rivertown jockey for my favorite.
With you on the title track, actually. That outro is monstrous and on its own is a high point of the album, but the rest of the song sounds super phoned in to me
I think Southern Air as a whole is the best track on the record and one of my favorite YC songs of all time. It is literally the ultimate YC song, and the best way to close out that "chapter" of YC. So good.
agreed. the verses are fine but i find the chorus melody really boring, thats pretty much why i don't like here i am alive as much too. the rest of the record (aside from 10) is so aggressive sounding and then those 2 sound, well, phoned in.
I almost replied to a lot of people but I really think every song on here is great, it's already bad enough to vote between them. Awakening, SA and Vicious Kind are all great.
Woah! Hit a nerve I see, hah. Care to expand? To me, instrumentally it's a major snooze. Guitars are basically doing the same thing the entire song, Mackin's not doing anything we haven't heard before, vocal melodies are stock at best ("here I aaaaaaaam" in the second verse is a particularly bad part). LP sounds really bored too, feel like it could benefit from a slightly higher BPM. Still stand by the outro though, the harmonizing riff after the last chorus is huge, paired with that awesome bass fill on the turnaround and landing on a soft chorus -- so good.
yea I'm gonna say straight up "this southern air is all i need" is a boring/almost unpleasant melody, at least compared to literally every other chorus thats obviously crazy subjective but i mean, they don't exactly write the most diverse albums, so if one is a cut below the rest i think it really stands out
“Stock at best”? What does this mean? Do you think songwriters search a database for stock melodies like people in media use stock photos? I can’t say I give care too much how interested LP sounds. He’s always been an overrated component of the band, imo. Never gotten that feeling though. I think it’s an incredible song, lyrically, and probably one of the 3 or 4 most personal in the discography. It crystallizes the coming home/leaving home themes that run throughout not just this record, but the entire catalog. I can’t wrap my head around someone being a Yellowcard fan and not liking that song. Just doesn’t compute.
