OFTK maybe be their worst album but it definitely should not be omitted from discog conversations, October Nights put this band on the map. I'd take some songs on that record over some songs on OA
It's a record that I think is fine if I'm listening to it at the moment, but there's never been a time when I actively wanted to put it on and I don't think any songs on there are even in their top 50 or so.
yeah i don't consider anything pre ocean avenue to be really anything by the same band. nobody puts any of say anything's pre-IARB material in any rankings and i feel the same way about this
Well here it is. I know the die hard fans of the S/T will eat me alive but had to be honest. The two instrumentals Convocation and Three Flights Up I love dearly but had to rank them below any other full length song I like. Anything below them are songs that I'm not too big on. I realized how amazing their discography is doing this. So many great songs. 1. Holly Wood Died 2. Lift a Sail 3. Be the Young 4. The Takedown 5. Awakening 6. Back Home 7. Southern Air 8. Rough Landing, Holly 9. Cut Me, Mick 10. The Sound of You and Me 11. You and Me and One Spotlight 12. Paper Walls 13. Always Summer 14. Keeper 15. Rivertown Blues 16. Surface of the Sun 17. Space Travel 81. Make Me So 82. Dear Bobbie 83. I'm a Wrecking Ball 84. Two Weeks from Twenty
Yeah, absolutely. Those songs projected them into the mainstream but they had the attention of the "underground" well before OA and would never have gotten there without OFTK. Still remember kids at my middle school flipping their lids over that record
Yeah, I mean, that's fair. Definitely not trying to make the argument that it's a great record or something. But imo pretending it doesn't exist is like saying Fall Out Boy starts with FUCT, when Grand Theft Autumn got everyone's attention in the first place. It should hold some merit in their career at the very least even if it's not that good
You sold me on that point. Take This To Your Grave has some of FOBs best songs on it. Well said. I already made my list though so just put all the OLFTK songs at the bottom..........but above two weeks from twenty.
Man, you're gonna make me come into the Yellowcard thread to criticize your rankings, too? :p Having Sing For Me, Rest In Peace, Savior's Robes, Got Yours, Fields & Fences, and Leave A Light On so low is borderline criminal. On the other hand, You and Me and One Spotlight is definitely a top 10 Yellowcard song so it being high up is a thumbs up from me.
Man there is like zero chance I could rank all of their songs hahaha. I'd totally be down to do a bracket though, I haven't participated in any of the others on the site but a YC one would be fun
See, to me it's like saying FOB started with TTTYG even though they technically started with Evening Out. I was actually gonna use FOB as a counterexample haha. Another one is that I pretty much consider TWY to have started at Upsides.
First A Place for My Head at #1 and now Be the Young at #3? Jesus, man. You're really not a fan of the self titled, huh?
Well, I did it. Sleep in the Snow Southern Air Afraid You and Me and One Spotlight Cut Me, Mick Lift a Sail Rest in Peace Fields and Fences With You Around Rivertown Blues The Sound of You and Me Savior’s Robes A Place We Set Afire MSK Fragile and Dear Telescope Life of Leaving Home Holly Wood Died Ocean Avenue Surface of the Sun Shrink the World Keeper Date Line (I Am Gone) Shadows and Regrets Here I Am Alive Madrid Illuminate Leave a Light On Fighting One Year, Six Months The Takedown Paper Walls A Vicious Kind Ten Dear Bobbie Only One Always Summer Hide Make Me So What Appears The Hurt Is Gone California Awakening Rough Landing, Holly For You and Your Denial Soundtrack Miles Apart Inside Out The Deepest Well Convocation Back Home Breathing Got Yours Way Away One Bedroom Believe Empty Street Twentythree My Mountain Light Up the Sky Life of a Salesman How I Go Lights and Sounds Crash the Gates Three Flights Up Hang You Up Five Becomes Four Transmission Home Sing for Me Down on My Head Sure Thing Falling See Me Smiling Be the Young Empty Apartment I’m a Wrecking Ball Space Travel Grey Martin Sheen or JFK Words, Hands, Hearts Waiting Game View from Heaven City of Devils Two Weeks from Twenty
Ha! Great minds? Tbh I'd equate Evening Out to like, Where We Stand (maybe even the Still Standing EP, since EOWYGF is also considered an EP and both contain songs the groups would later re-use). Those were the early, early releases that realistically did little to nothing for the band's overall careers imo. OFTK and TTTYG were like the middle steps for both bands that truly established their names in the scene and eventually afforded them the reach they were able to achieve with their follow up releases -- where they both charted for the first time and became household names (OA and FUCT). OFTK is pretty indisputably a landmark of progress for Yellowcard so I feel like it's strange to section it off as a "different band" or whatever, quality music or not. Dunno enough about TWY to say one way or the other there, but I'll take your word for it! Haha
I can get down with a lot of this list. But Grey, Martin Sheen or JFK, Waiting Game, and City of Devils are probably in my top 25 YC songs. Id probably replace them at the bottom with Make Me So, Madrid, One Bedroom, and Dear Bobbie.
Also strongly agree with this. You can't just eliminate the album that put them on the map. October Nights, Avondale and Rough Draft are the OG YC songs.
Man, I really just cannot connect with Lift a Sail. Every time it starts to grow on me again I just find myself lacking a certain connection with it that I have with their other records. I just can't get down with how things seem to pull back every time it feels ready to really come together. Lyrically, emotionally, I love it. I just cannot find that same connection with it that I have with all of their other stuff, including the ST.
You and Me and One Spotlight is amazing. I like those songs from S/T minute Leave a Light On. You can't look at a the ones further down the list as bad songs, just good songs that have better before it I said all the S/T fans would go crazy over the list lol. No, I like it fine, it's just they have such a stacked discography. Everything above the S/T songs deserve that love. You know A Place For My Head is a beloved LP song. You will see the light one day I hope It absolutely is I had a way harder time than with LP too.
