In the second verse of What Appears when he sings "you are born" I always think it's going to be "you are bored", haha. I dunno why, just something about the way he enunciates the word.
Love Crash the Gates, too and agree about Make Me So. Make Me So just didn't fit the album to me. Way overproduced, too many electronics, it's the one part of LaS that I don't like. But since we're talking about LaS bridges, the bridge in Make Me So is really great.
Ah, fuck. Yeah this is sorta starting to hit me a little harder than I thought it would have. I'm roughly 12 listens deep over past couple of days and I still don't think I'm gonna have the emotional reaction a lot of posters in here are experiencing, but it's definitely starting to set in now that there isn't gonna be anymore Yellowcard. Had been putting off buying a ticket to the farewell tour due to the price, but I just pulled the trigger and now I'm wondering how I ever thought I'd be even remotely okay with missing this show haha
Illuminate, Lift a Sail and MSK are all top-tier Yellowcard songs for me. But yeah, Make Me So doesn't need to be there.
"Make Me So" feels like the song that got thrown on when someone said "I don't hear a single." But I think five or six of their best songs ever are on that album. Those three, "Fragile and Dear," and "California" are all favorites for me.
I think when people look back on Lift a Sail, they will recognize how great Fragile and Dear really is.
What Appears is quickly racing its way to my Top 10 YC songs list. I just can't get over that massive and infectious wall of sound combined with such a strong, hopeful, and nostalgic lyric.
Idobi radio is going to have a round table discussion on this album playing it in full and the band's career if anyone is interested. Starts in a half hour!
My current rankings would be something like this Southern Air Yellowcard Paper Walls Life A Sail Ocean Avenue Lights & Sounds When Youre Through Thinking, Say Yes One For The Kids Top 10 Sleep In The Snow Paper Walls Southern Air Life A Sail Rest In Peace You and Me and One Spotlight Way Away Rough Landing, Holly Saviors Robes Illuminate
We're on a pretty similar page in terms of album rankings (I'd swap Sail and Paper Walls and L&S and When You're Through Thinking). My top 10 songs, off the top of my head Back Home Southern Air Fields and Fences The Sound of You and Me Always Summer Ocean Avenue Lift a Sail Rest in Peace Illuminate A Place We Set Afire Probably. Edit: Maybe "Keeper" or "Shadows and Regrets" somewhere. Band has too many good songs.
Listened to the album 3 times already and while it's way too early to rank it, I think that it could absolutely surpass Paper Walls as my favorite YC album
I could get on board with a singer/songwriter album from Ryan in the vein of I'm a Wrecking Ball. That song is great. I really dig this swan song album from YC. Well done and thanks for the great albums and live shows fellas!
Wouldn't be surprised to see something like this after some time passes. Wasn't Will and the Whiskeymen something that he started when he opened his studio in Nashville?
I believe so. I don't know if it was true, but I thought the original plan for the crowd-funded campaign for the studio was supposed to be for that project. I would like to see Ryan do a record with Butch Walker and Ryan Adams lending some input or producing, where they just really push Ryan to make an awesome record.
The second movement to Fields and Fences... ok! Very cool closer. A little mix of where the band is currently at and some last memories of more traditional YC to ride out to. I feel it.
Listening to it again. I LOVE "A Place We Set Afire" and "What Appears". Also, "Leave a Light On" is so amazing.
I think the backer-reward was supposed to be a Will & Whiskeymen EP, but I'm not sure if that panned out. But yeah, I would be extremely down for something like that.
I know two Will and the Whiskeymen songs leaked onto YouTube. I'm not sure if that's the EP or part of the EP, but they are out there
The last update on his Kickstarter said that he was going to record the Will and the Whiskeymen EP in April 2017.
