Surely you’re aware that not everyone was able to watch the livestream. I’m very excited to hear the rest of it!
If for some reason you do not like this song, which appears to be the case (and that is totally fine btw), please trust that the EP contains some of the best work of their entire career. While I really enjoy Childhood Eyes, somehow I actually think the remaining 4 songs on the EP will become bigger fan favorites; 1 song specifically being a potential top 5 YC song of all time for me.
Only in music are you constantly compared to something you put out two decades earlier. Try and look at it as a positive thing though. It just shows how much people loved that album. For me, Paper Walls is probably my favorite YC album, and that's coming from someone who found you guys on purevolume, so I've been a fan for a while. I missed the livestream, but this song sounds great. So awesome to have you guys back.
This. I don’t take it on. I said what I said. Definitely not intending to antagonize people —was just my opinion. But if the whole site is against my opinion simply go where you’re wanted kind of thing. When I was younger I would probably go to war lol. But at 36 naw I post comments for fun about bands I’m excited about.
You posted in a thread the lead singer is in that he isn't singing with emotion or heart and then say you're "not intending to antagonize people" lol ... yeah, I don't believe you.
Damn, I had no idea the EP was streamed last night! Loving this song and I'm extremely excited to hear the rest of them. Whoever said they're on a par with Jimmy Eat World was correct, easily my two favorite bands! Hopefully new Jimmy is coming this year too!
I just went back and realized people mentioned the low energy and Ryan responded. I had no idea my comment was excessive at the time of posting. Nor did I know Ryan replied to similar comments already. With that said, I deleted it as it was not an original comment for this thread nor was I intending to sht on the work of an artist that is clearly active on this thread. If you don’t believe that…that’s unfortunate.
Longtime reader, first time commenter. A few things It’s really cool that @williamryankey is a member here. It’s not often you get to interact with one of your musical heroes. Having said that, it’s not going to scare me from giving my honest opinion: I don’t like the song. The rest of the EP is solid though. It won’t rank among my favorite YC releases, but it’s freakin’ AWESOME to have these guys back. The tour is gonna be fantastic. I love all the bands on the bill, but bummed Anberlin won’t be at my date. Now, not everyone is going to agree with the majority and that’s fine. I just wish people, including the site’s owner (LOVE the newsletter, Jason), were more welcoming to alternative opinions to theres. It just seems like there’s no respect given to opposing opinions; they’re often met with sarcasm and straight up dismissal. Just an observation.
Seriously, WRK could sing the dictionary and I'd be blown the fuck away! You can't say these guys don't bring the same energy they brought 20+ years ago. They were fantastic then and still are now. If anything, they've only gotten stronger and better as they've matured. I'm stoked and totally here for the YC3 era!
My only critique is that on my first listen I was expecting a ripping guitar and/or violin solo, similar to something like "The Takedown" or "Always Summer" after Ryan's "Let's go!". But subsequent listens have lessened that disappointment significantly.
I feel like people are confusing tempo with energy. This song has a mid tempo, but is very energetic.
I still don’t like the song very much, but the drums really drive the chorus. Tons of energy there for sure.
All this drama made me want to take a second listen! I like the spoken/sung style in the verses. Chorus melody is an earworm. Bridge lyrics threw me for a loop, but overall song is great. 8/10
Really like the song, and imo it's the 3rd best song on the EP. Yellowcard will forever be the band that got me into this genre of music. I still remember my daily drives to the local Piggly Wiggly as a 17 year old blasting Paper Walls with the windows down. For me, it's always gonna be the top YC release and one of my favorite albums of all time. Great to have these dudes back. Saw them for the return at Riot Fest, and fully intend to camp out all day and see them at Summerfest next month.
I can't wait for the tour and to hear the EP in full as well! So happy to have Yellowcard back!! As for the drama in this thread, I have two theories: - The song feels like it wants to tap into that punchier, mid-tempo, upbeat sound we associate with Southern Air/IYTTSY (and other earlier albums too) but the production sounds more like something from the self-titled album. I keep listening to it expecting that brighter, crunchier sound to match the groove of the song but instead it has that more moody, darker sheen to it like on S/T; I really notice it in the violin and drums. I'm not passing judgment that it's good or bad, there's just a tension there that people might be picking up on and causing dissonance as it tickles different parts of their brains than they are expecting. This is probably the "new Yellowcard sound" which is, well, new and might take some getting used to but I'm eager to hear it on the full EP! - I also...hooboy...I also wonder if people associate this style of Yellowcard song with LP, who had a unique groove to his playing that anchored a lot of classic mid-tempo Yellowcard songs in our minds. Lift a Sail and Self-titled had a different vibe which we associate with Nate Young's drums, but we're not used to hearing a song like this without LP. Nate Young is a different drummer than LP, which is fine, he's great! Every drummer is different...and I wonder if people are expecting LP-style syncopated snare fills to drive the song into the chorus since the song is harkening back to that era of the band and are confused when it doesn't happen. For the record, I think Ryan sounds great, especially his mix-belt at the end of the song (just smooth and effortless sounding) and the speak-singing stuff people have mentioned.
