Yacht Fakes a Stolen Sex Tape for Publicity

The band Yacht faked having their sex tape stolen to try and build hype for their new video. There’s a sentence I never thought I’d be typing.
Here’s Anna Merlan, writing for Jezebel:

That wasn’t quite right, of course, because there was no actual sex tape: when I tried to download it, I just got an error message, and so did lots of other people. The only folks claiming to have seen it, as we noted in an update yesterday, were Yacht’s famous friends. (I’m going to stop capitalizing their band name now because it’s tiresome and because I find them tiresome).

But most folks probably didn’t try to download it at all, because Yacht said the video was leaked without their consent. Most people are not craven and/or horny enough to watch a video whose participants are begging you not to view it. Most people don’t suck. Most people aren’t Yacht.

The thing about revenge porn—the real kind, not the desperate fake kind cooked up to attract extra attention to your mediocre art band—is that it ruins lives.

people would only care about a leaked sex tape if you were already famous.

And I saw them on campus my freshman year of college (billed in between AGBPOL and The Front Bottoms). They were legitimately awful. Like, just not good music at all with an obnoxious stage presence that would only work if people are actually into your music. Basically a shitty attempt at trying to sound like LCD Soundystem

    Ew, David

I can't believe they actually thought this was a good idea. How are people this stupid?

  10. Haven't listened to Yacht in nearly a decade but I did like them in high school. Had no idea they were still around.

Anyway, man, what a major fuck up on their part. Can't imagine a group of people coming together and being so collectively dense that they thought this would be a good idea by any stretch of the term

lol@them referring to it as a 'celebrity sex tape'.

The absurdity to me is them thinking this would be some huge news plastered all over the media.

Like, the fact that they even thought this was slightly a good idea is insane. "Hey...you know what will make people listen to our music? A video of us having sex!"

Some Stan was going in on me earlier defending them saying it isn't a big deal. This was no tween either. I had to block them.

  19. this band even posted yesterday that they were "exploited "

and now their statement reads like they weren't doing it

someone on facebook was trying spin this as "bad pr is better than no pr" and that their album came out last year, and now people are talking about it. and asked "Did they lose fans with the so-so new record generally? Would you bail on a band you loved 'cause of a dumb moment?"

YES. I WOULD ABSOLUTELY BAIL. da faq?

lots of people refuse to abandon pedophiles, rapists, abusers, and other kinds of shit people. in the grand scheme of things, this isn't as bad as that stuff and i imagine it wont have much of an effect on their audience.

Shows how shitty their music must be that they had to do a stunt like this to get people to talk about their band.

Met my girlfriend when Yacht played at a school here in Salem. We bonded over how bad Yacht was and how it seemed like they were trying way too hard. Good to see things haven't changed.
