The specifics have evolved over time from what I understand (though people connected to the X-office are vague because it still plays into their upcoming plans), but Moira’s mind being broken is right there in House of X through implication. I believe it’s life 6 where, after living so long and seeing where the Phalanx stuff goes, she becomes radicalized and violent. That’s why one life is assassinating the Trasks, and another is joining Apocalypse.

There were plans at one point for a Moira book written by Al Ewing, which would’ve shown a bit more of Moira’s journey through her lives. But, I guess as plans evolved, that book didn’t really make sense anymore. Thankfully, that process got Al’s foot in the door, leading to the best Storm writing in an X book in years.

Listening now. Hickman is going into the original pitch of HoX/PoX to marvel at the start. Really interesting. Apparently Hickman asked Gillen to be a part of the X office at the beginning. That would have been something.

So interesting to listen to Hickman’s perspective on the creative process, working for Marvel, etc. So wild to think we got so close to getting New Gods and Legion of Superheroes from him. Funny that he’s more open about Bendis being frustrated and quitting X-Men than Bendis is.

lol, David has my favorite Superman takes on Twitter dot com. Consistently correct about Jon Kent.

I’m absolutely happy to have HoXPoX before any major DC work from Hickman, but I also desperately want to see what a Hickman New Gods would look like. Also, oh my goodness, imagine if we’d had gotten some comics pages written by Hickman with Jim Lee art!

I’ve gotta make sure to listen to that this week. Hickman is going to be at Heroes Con in Charlotte in 2 weeks. Last year he signed a few of my X-Men books and this year I’m hoping I’ll be lucky enough to get him and Steve Epting to sign some of my FF and New Avengers stuff.

This is making me irrationally angry. I would have bought 3 copies of each issue.

Well… the Hellfire Gala was a tough read. Wild ride.

lol, I was wondering if you’d pop in and have a Gala opinion.

I flipped through the issue, engaged with a couple interviews about it, and then went “nope.” Not for me! That team reveal page turn was simultaneously one of the funniest and most annoying things I’ve seen in a Marvel book recently.

Looking forward to Dark X-Men & Ms Marvel, though.

I’m utterly terrified of where they’re going to go with it. Petrified even. But honestly after reading it I’m more sure now that krakoa isn’t going anywhere. The page turn was so funny, but I loved the idea of that being the team for a page. Ms Marvel got a hell of an introduction into what being a mutant is like.

the actual comic felt like Duggan writing a Hickman story though, not his best work and god I’d have loved to see what Hickman would have done with it. I expect Gillen and Ewing to absolutely nail their Fall of X books though. It’s a great set up to let those two just go crazy with storylines.

I’m not convinced that this issue would exist if Hickman were still Head of X, lol. I think broad ideas of his are still in the line’s DNA, and I wouldn’t be shocked if the inevitable “Phalanx Covenant” or whatever were written by him (though idk, maybe Ewing or Percy or whoever could do it). But, I think the current writers are piloting the ship, & I think Duggan dreamt this up.

(If Hickman does write some kinda “Phalanx Covenant” eventually, I bet it’s prohibitively expensive, like Ultimate Invasion & the upcoming G.O.D.S. Marvel price creep fucking sucks at the moment!)

The whole Kamala thing is so wild and fascinating to watch. Weird mix of exciting and misguided at every step thus far. I’m excited for that mini, but I’d argue it feels like Marvel still isn’t 100% sure what to do with her.

I have some questions, but I figure they will be answered soon enough.

    - Where was X-force
    - where the hell did Forge go
    - where was Dani moonstar, since she’s leading Realm
    - where are Captain Britain and Rachel Summers
    - what’s the mystery book Duggan teased with “once an X-men, always an x-men?”

also, can someone tell me what is up with Quentin Quire? I haven’t really been paying attention as I think that book just got worse and worse over time, but last I remembered he was like erased by a rogue cerebro helmet or something but then there was still an older future version of him?

Ah I do. Simply because it’s a mutant massacre following on from his Inferno. I’d say it would have looked markedly different but the same story beats.

I have no idea what to think of Ms Marvel. I love the character and accept that originally she was to be a mutant, I also think there’s a story there for a half mutant half inhuman. But this whole thing screams of “we have no idea what to do let’s do something drastic!”. The real interesting part is what comes after Ms Marvel: The New Mutant. Does she get her own book to continue to explore her unique background in a post Krakoa world? Or does she continue to get relegated to backup character, or another Young Avengers style book where all of the uniqueness of the character is pushed to the background in favour of her being a team leader.

X-Force I guess were off tailing Beast given where Wolverine is at the minute. If there’s one thing we know for sure about the Krakoa era is X-Force is really bad at stopping attacks on Krakoa lol. But yeah they’re kind of fractured at the moment given Beast’s nonsense and distrusting the quiet council for allowing Beast’s nonsense to continue unchecked.

Forge probably got lost in the initial attack. Dani/Betsy/Rachel yeah no idea.

Mystery Duggan book, I guess is a Firestar/Orchis based book which would be super cool.

Quentin was “erased” but basically saw what Beast was up to with the Cerebro Sword and followed him into a future and had been fighting him as a kind of freedom fighter hence why he couldn’t be resurrected. Eventually he went back in time and rounded up X-Force to come to that future to beat Beast.

    Assume It's A Bit

Favorite part of the issue by far was Jean saying to Firestar, with absolutely no hesitation, to throw Beast under the bus and to just make up whatever she wants to make it stick if it came to that

ETA: Also, as always, Magneto was right "I fear it will come soon. Our enemies will strike... and Charles will feel forced by events to act. To do something-- because something must be done, however terrible-- and because, in the no-place of his heart, he cannot see a choice. And on that day... he will martyr us all. He is a good man, Ororo. We must be wary of good men. For what will they not do... to show how good they are?"

Magneto is always right. I complain about bringing characters back from the dead a lot undermining their death but fuck Krakoa Mags was so good I’d have loved him to be a part of this. It’s perfect for him to be leading the resistance alongside Emma.

I just really do not want to see her absorbed into all these big mutant events to the detriment of her own ongoing story and supporting cast.

Granted, I’d argue that Marvel hasn’t known what to do with Kamala since the moment Wilson’s run ended. Ahmed is a good writer, but that run was mostly a big ol' miss. And then, when it ended (seemingly earlier than originally intended, due to the state of things during COVID), they couldn't figure out where to put her next. The first interesting status quo they found was working for the redeemed Osborn, but instead of giving her a full spinoff like Gold Goblin or Hallow's Eve, it became a stepping stone towards a classic "death and return" gimmick on the road to Krakoa.

(At least the 1/3 of the Fallen Friend issue written by Wilson was good! Unfortunately best Ms Marvel story in a while.)

I think this miniseries, with Vellani guiding the story alongside Pirzada, will be good... but then what? Is she staying in the X-(ffice? Is she... a Duggan character going forward? I honestly hope not!

  18. Nick

    @fangclubb Prestigious

I don’t see her becoming an X-(ffice character to be honest. But really I don’t see much good coming her way either haha. If they can’t tempt Wilson back full time I’d kinda like Stephanie Phillips or Kelly Thompson writing her. Ashamed to say I don’t know many Muslim women writers who could take up the pen, I’d prefer that if possible.

I’d love a Firestar/Orchis led book. See the insides of Orchis. If there’s one shocking thing about the Hellfire Gala it has me sitting here wanting a fucking Firestar led comic :crylaugh:

I don’t think Kelly Thompson is a Marvel writer anymore, lol, with her Image stuff and Birds of Prey. And, I think G. Willow Wilson said all she had to say with her ongoing, though maybe she could be tempted to do a mini with the new status quo (especially since Kamala seems to also be sliding into “college age”).

My top pick for a Ms Marvel ongoing is probably Nadia Shammas. She’s a Palestinian-American writer (with a Christian background) who wrote Kamala in a young reader graphic novel, and has also done things ranging from the popular Squire graphic novel to an X-Force annual. Just don’t know if ongoing monthly comics are her thing or not.

(Also wonder how Vita Ayala is doing, and if they’d do good work with either Ms Marvel or the Champions.)

I’m hit-or-miss on Carlos Gómez; he looked good on X-Terminators and a while ago on Red Sonja, but Amazing Mary Jane was more “ok I guess.” Some of the issue here might be the colorist, whose name I think I recognize from other books I didn’t love visually.

Ian Herring did the Wilson and I think Ahmed runs, and has done every version of solo Silk comics. And, through the various iterations, his soft but appropriately bright style created some nice continuity. Would’ve been nice to have him return for this.

I bet they’ll do their usual X-book lettering style, but I’d love to see classic Kamala lettering return, too.
