Anyone ever use one of those Freewrite products? They look appealing but I don’t write anywhere near enough to justify that ridiculous cost. And they seem to be pretty divisive but I do like the concept
I always thought those products were cool but felt kinda gimmicky at the same time? Definitely a me thing in trying to figure out how best to support my workflow for writing. Speaking of, I just started using Obsidian and love it. It's very simple and minimalist, but using some of the community plugins has really made it shine. Does anyone use it here?
I started writing a Halloween story to share at work two Halloweens ago and I’m only now making some progress on it (while at work, oops), haha. I’ve always wanted to prioritize writing and actually complete something for a change but my motivation sees serious ebbs and flows. I’ll often write a paragraph and be like “damn where did that come from?” and then immediately move on to something else and not write again for months and months and months, lol.
I think I'm done with my draft? I was working on the epilogue/prologue. And then I removed the original prologue and split the epilogue in two for both parts. And then I was like, do I even need either? So I think I'm going without and moving onto the third draft, which is just me using a text-to-speech program to read the thing out loud like a normal book to catch things I could easily miss on the page. I also established a rough timeline, which was difficult. Needed to arrange 27 chapters across 5 different POVs in a timeline that made sense, as some of them range from six weeks to 5 days.
a small challenge for the poet writers here (or anyone willing to participate)… choose one of these three titles and write a short piece, be interested to see which directions people go in, and could be something fun (I love this thread): - sugarblood - with open eyes - drop the domino
Sounds like a dope experiment. Might try at some point! My NanoWriMo is going well. I’m actually collabing on a single novel with two other writers and we’re switching off writing duties every day. It’s a true Nano situation where we developed a completely fresh story and are trying to get it all/mostly drafted in November, though we’re falling a bit behind (still making progress though!). All three of our voices are different but complement each other IMO. Right now we’re at roughly 25K words and about halfway through.
I've been getting writer's block and not writing as much this year as I would have liked, but ever since September I've been reading more books and writing more because of it. Recently been reading poetry which has been helping me turn those creative gears. I'm about to hit 30,000 words on my first ever take at writing a novel and enjoying the progress of it. Still going slow, writing about 2-3 pages a day, but I'm really liking the time I've been putting to the book.
challenge accepted. unfinished... -------------------------------------- your ambitions run on technicolor dreams but in high definition, enveloped by the scenes overdose on oxygen and dopamine unaware that your head is resting underneath the dullest guillotine (chorus) with open eyes it's harder than it seems to take all you've ever believed and find every fabrication with open eyes it's easier to misunderstand wants don't always equal haves never owed an explanation
Hi hello I used to write poetry and am trying to get back into it. I want to publish by the end of the year. Any help would be appreciated. Has anyone else published or put out zines or anything?
Yup. A few of us here. I’m proud to have published both fiction and poetry in journals, published three books through small presses, won awards, attend readings; I’ve edited for lit journals and hosted workshops etc. Tooting my own horn here, but toot toot. If you go through the thread, I’m sure you can find some great resources we’ve already spoken about, but if you have any specific questions feel free to ask.
well I officially requested a quote from 3 different artists for a cover design for my book, so that's nerve-wracking
aaaand 2/3 already denied my request saying they couldn't work within my budget lol There were only 17 designers within my parameters on Reedsy, so perhaps I need to cast a wider net
To be fair, I'm kind of torn between an original illustration or some kind of typography. I'm sure the latter is much cheaper. It's obviously a huge difference because I think something like this that is epic and grandiose in scale is so cool: but that's so much more work than text and a background with maybe some minimal art: Obviously a big difference between the two in terms of work. In all honesty I should probably just stick with the latter
My only suggestion is that you should go with the art that is most precious to you personally. It'll be the face of your book forever, so you want something that you actually love, not something you chose only because of budget. If you keep looking, I'm confident you'll eventually find something within your price range that actually fits your work. Something you could also do is find an original work of art you like, (pay the artist for using it), and then a separate designer makes it into a cover. That's what I've done with all three of my books so far. Unfortunately, I don't know too many fantasy cover designers off the top of my head. Although I do know the author who wrote this book and the design is really dope- kind of gives me a similar vibe. I could check the artist credit in the book if you dig it and you could reach out.
