Sounds like Backlash was worth watching, will rock through it this afternoon

one thing that confused me last night was JBL. Is he supposed to be a heel commentator? You'd think so, but he was condemning just about every heel move throughout the night

He probably grabbed the wrong notes.

The Osprey/Ricochet combo at 4:53 might be my favorite of the ones they've done.

I love Trevor Lee's backflip into German suplex on Dalton.

    Is this true?

Dangerous, sure. The real problem is that they had a lot of unsafe, out of shape guys for years. Things are changing a lot. I think they are more open to other people using moves like that now. Look at the CWC. You have guys using package pile drivers and the fucking burning hammer. Seeing God's last gift and the Styles clash are a huge step in the right direction as long as guys continue to be safe workers and are willing to take the bumps.

also, the Tombstone should be something that Kane and the Undertaker do exclusively until they leave the company.

Tombstone is also a bit safer than a normal piledriver because the knees are there to take the blow, whereas with a normal piledriver the head can get fucked if it's off even a little bit (ala Owen/Austin)

Don't get me wrong, loving me some AJ and enjoying everything he's done so far. But in all honesty he should have been here 10 years ago. He's 39 who knows how long he's going to stay here. If only Triple H came into power before then. Vince wasn't having any of these TNA guys back then.

Finally a solid PPV. Love the classic heel "cheat" tactics. Glad the title changed hands. Guess I was wrong about Styles.

I think it's more of a perception/PR and gimmick thing than anything else. It's not so much that the Piledriver is unsafe in practice by experienced wrestlers, it's that it's perceived as being dangerous by people outside of wrestling and kids have actually accidentally killed their friends trying to copy that move before. Also I think maybe Vince doesn't want other people doing it because it's so associated with Taker and Kane at this point that he may consider that gimmick infringement.

Also I think some old school promoters like Cornette in ROH for example don't like it used because of the thought process of "the guy is getting dropped on his head, you can never kick out of that move without it seeming fake"

Also there was an exception to the "no piledrivers" thing a few years back

I mean, Cole's reaction and the chatter when that happened was that Punk and Cena just said fuck it and did it on their own, knowing they wouldn't be punished...I don't think it's fair to call that an "exception"

THat feels like weak logic to me, ultimately. There's lots of moves that look like you'll never get up from in wrestling. Hell, I see a package piledriver as looking way worse than the tombstone

That said, when this got used, it should have been what did Cena in. When someone resorts to an "illegal" move like that, it should finish matches.

Same reason that Burning Hammer in the CWC was odd. It looked fucking devastating, and its history is that it ALWAYS finishes matches. Having Ibushi kick out took away a little.

But I definitely hope we get back the Sami Zayn Brainbustaa! if they're allowing riskier moves back in

Cornette legitimately banned Owens from using the Package Piledriver in ROH for awhile for that reason.

Ryback legally changing his name to Ryback. All we need now is the Self Destruction of Ryback DVD

Yeah that's what I heard some people speculating Cody Rhodes might do. It's a legal loophole that lets you sell merch and maybe go on tv using your WWE name.

I have actually read the opposite. The Ultimate Warrior tried to do the same thing but changed his to just Warrior because its still against trademark.

I believe where the dividing line lies is whether the name was used before they entered the WWE and thus changing their name legally gives them cover to use it. In the case of both Ryback and Cody those were both used exclusively in the WWE.

It's actually whether or not the name sounds like an actual name or not. Like, you can't copyright the name John, but you can copyright Johnny Firebreather because it's irrational for someone to have that name.
