Im genuinely shocked he wasnt there tonight (or at least not publicly shown...he was likely there backstage).

 

I didn’t know until a few days ago that Gunther beat Goldberg with the sleeper in that retirement match and now the same with Cena. So strange that Gunther doesn’t have his own submission hold and used like the first submission ever created to retire two of the biggest names in the business (cherry on top of it also being the move Jey beat him with for the title lol)

 

Part of Gunther’s thing has been that simple stuff finishes matches. Splash, powerbomb, sleeper. It’s different but good

 

He doesn’t even really have a finisher either. His finisher is usually the sleeper or a powerbomb. This would have been a great opportunity to debut something

 

Cena tapping to end his career is good. Doing it to a sleeper while basically corpsing is so fucking funny lol

B ending to a C final year

Im being very very very generous and saying the Cena final year was a C mostly because looking back.....he tried to do it all. He did old time foes and new timers. Ending with Dom and Gunther was great.

The journey itself was terrible but in retrospect I guess I can kind of see what they were going for.

Cenas final match being on a dead streaming platform in Decemver in randomly DC is a fitting end to a very C ending

that was fine. women were motn for me. Sol Ruca is probably my favorite women's wrestler in WWE but i cant do NXT so it was cool to see her show out here. honest to God if you dropped me in without context i would have told you she was calling the match.

the tag was fun, it had "we have like 5 minutes" written all over it but everyone looked good and AJs botch added to the match pretty well.

Cena/Gunther just could never hit. having Cena sucked off to Sweet Disposition 40 times really took some of the steam out of me. it was a good match and Cena looked like he could still go which is exactly what he wanted.

if it weren't for the RIYADH SEASON ad, this would have felt like a show from the pre-TKO era tbh. unfortunately, the reality is it was there and the patriot John Cena kissing his shoes on it is a reminder he and this company do fuckin suck

Cena smirking made it worse. Should've been another submission hold and had him screaming in pain then taps. Or even a pass out in the sleeper would've been better than that.

Gunther should win the Rumble off this, but realistically with Brock/Roman/Bronn/etc in the mix, he wont.

Kind of amazing that in Cena's entire final year, absolutely nobody (other than maybe Dom slightly) is coming out of it better off than they started the year.

 

The company is sure worse off. Cody had a terrible year.

To be fair it was a lot of one offs. I think they wanted Cena to play all the hits as fast as possible. But you can't argue...he did put over Dom and Gunther big time at the end.

 

I see Bron and Gunther winning Rumble and Elimination Chamber, how they get there is up to them, of course. I also wouldn't be surprised if they took the belt off Punk to start 2026 and had him win one of the two PLEs.

 

My biggest issue with the Cena ending is that the wwe does ONE thing really well and its their golden gun..... history/pageantry etc. You are retiring one of your all time legends. You can't do somethinf better than this?

You couldn't do something with Kurt angle (he was there)...orton...etc?

 

It’ll be interesting to read stories about this entire last year / run in a few years.

Allegedly Cena wanted Brock back and wanted to be squashed but people claim they can’t find anywhere to confirm that and that Cena has never said it (and only said something like, “I just do whatever they say and fight whoever is next in line”), allegedly Cena chose this ending with tapping to Gunther, allegedly Cena said he wanted a full year or 100+ appearances but Trips or someone told him, “nah we only need 30ish”, allegedly this, allegedly that, etc.

Mix in that you have some giant assholes and ego’s in the room trying to put this all together and it’ll forever be hard or impossible to get the full truth well only get shades of it (Rock and Trips don’t get along, Rock being Trips’ boss so did he abandon the heel turn out of spite, do Rock and Cena really get along or was Rock jumping ship also to make him look bad, was/is Trips jealous of Cena so tried to mess up parts of this retirement year, etc.)

 

the fact that they went back to the sleeper so much towards the end of the match just for cena to tap out was flat for me. coulda told a better story with cena passing out: cena goes down swinging, never giving up; gunther rejects that victory cause he didn't beat cena the way he said he would, goes on a sleeper rampage on both faces and heels out of anger.

 

Feels like HHH says this every three weeks or so lol
