I can afford AEW PPVs (and no one I could convince to split it) and I've maybe only ever bought 1 or 2 through the VPN method, streaming the rest, and I'd imagine the "network effect" of the cost plays a major part of.


I also don't think AEW going streaming would bring down the PPV price. HBO/Discovery streaming would be entirely contingent on whether or not that company actually wants to get into live programming and there's no reason for them to build out the functionality just for AEW.

I could see them bringing back the ROH "subscribe to the streaming service and you get a discount on the PPV" approach, not sure if that can be done on the backbone of HBO/Discovery

 

I get it. I apologize if I came off like an ass. Wasn’t trying to poke at anyone’s finances.

The thing I realize is WWE has much more of a financial backing to be able to do so. They are a huge, publicly traded company. AEW could not do that unless they found someone pay them for streaming rights. AEW is much smaller and needs to income from these shows to survive regardless of how much money Tony has. The TV ratings and success of the PPV’s are crucial to their survival and getting a bigger TV or streaming deal.

I think more eyeballs on the product also has to do with the product, more than the price. Regardless of how expensive the shows are, the last 3-6 months have been lacking in terms of great stories. The MJF promo was a great opportunity, but who knows where he is.

The TV needs to be more focused on telling stories than have 8 matches in a two hour show where half of the matches have no purpose. I love the in ring product, but they need more compelling stories. We should know the entire card of a big show like All Out more than a week or two before the show. There’s some long term stories on All Out, but there’s not one title match built around any sort of built feud. Some of of hottest stars FTR/Wardlow are put in a stupid 6 man tag with Jay Lethal, who I love, but is not over at all. They have great potential, but are going through some growing pains right now. I think Tony needs to spread the creative around instead of doing an insane amount of stuff by himself.
