God this is sad. Its inexcusable, and from two guys I respect as voices of the sport, but their promo tactic in 2005 was to drop two racist slurs, including the n-word, and then double down on it.

Excalibur: "Super Dragon, I see before this match, you hedged your bets, you bought some friends backstage. But Super Dragon, you think you can replace myself and Disco Machine with a beaner and a fucking ******?"

Steen: "Does that word offend you... ******?"

Yeah, I guess its been making the rounds again this week in a different context...I sort of understand the notion that if you're Steen and two owners of the promotion your working for talk you into the idea, you go for it...but it just underlines how toxic the wrestling world is. The next line in the Cageside Rumors is people “chewing Vince’s ear off” to get Tessa signed; a woman who got herself ousted in 2020 in part for racist shit.

Just feels like you should never have to be told not to drop the hard-r in a promo...

edit: Though there is a small part of me laughing at the idea that they needed to drop "beaner" as a slur for Sami Zayn, impossibly white Canadian man who also happens to have Syrian heritage

Wonder how much of his own money is at stake in this if Redbird Capital is the representing group/how many other people are in the group? The Rock has always seemed pretty smart with the investments he makes, and the XFL doesn't exactly have the best track record for success

 

Normally I’d say the Rock would find a way to make it work but that’s gotta be one of the worst purchases you could make in a time when you don’t even know for sure if the nfl can even come back right now

 

And do you really want the association with wrestling and Vince and honestly the recklessness of the original XFL if you're trying to pull that off in 2021 or beyond?

Feels like for $15mil you could hire enough lawyers and branding experts to create something better.

 

It was doing a lot better this most recent time as far as critical reception goes. I seem to recall a lot of sportswriters having fun with it. To me it’s like I wouldn’t buy any sports team let alone league right now. And I don’t know shit about team/league owning but I think my personal cap on buying the XFL would be like 3 mil.

 

Why do I feel like the rock will eventually be part owner of WWE now.
