I generally like Bixenspan's writing, but this piece is baffling to me. There are two tiers to NXT. There is NXT the product, which is there to sell tickets and entertain people. Then there is NXT the developmental division. Just because we don't see the latter on TV doesn't mean it's not successfully happening. These uninitiated athletes he talks about shouldn't be doing shows on TV or likely even in front of live audiences at this very moment. They should be brushing shoulders with these indie veterans behind the scenes at the performance center, away from the eyes of everyone else, so they can grow into professionals and hopefully have long careers.

Also NXT the product is different from the main roster product. Braun and Elias's main roster success is I think due to three parts: 1) Getting the right push from management, 2) having the gimmick that connected with the main roster crowd and 3) seizing their opportunities.

Braun really didn't turn into the main event star he is now until they really started utilizing his big man gimmick doing stuff like the ambulance flip which is well out of what's feasible on NXT.

Elias both needed that weekly reinforcement of who he is and what he does that NXT can't provide, and also just has a gimmick that works better with less smarky crowds.

The conclusion the WWE should make (and I hope is making) from Braun and Elias's success is not that NXT is unnecessary, its just that the NXT TV product isn't necessary for all characters to find success.

Kinda disappointed with them dumping Tozawa out as well.

I'm seeing this big lad against Ishii in May!!

I know it's a WWE cliche and I dont want to necessarily play into the trope, but Elias is a big fuckin' dude physically, which helps. If he's a smaller dude, I'm not sure he gets the repeated opportunities to go out there every week and get that gimmick over.

Nese/Gulak was great. What an ending. Another great episode of 205.

And a lot of those people are wrestling NXT house shows and getting in-ring work. Hell, Lana wrestled 15 singles matches in about a month at NXT shows (going 14-1) before her "debut" against Naomi. Its why she only looked mediocre in the ring, instead of laughably incompetent.

But none of that is obvious unless you are going to NXT shows and looking at Cagematch/Profightdb to see how many NXT shows they run

Since I find Tony Nese to be the most boring guy I've seen in WWE for a LONG time, that match was phenomenal. And really smart to turn Gulak back true heel in the reboot

If he was fine being a CW again for a bit, having him come back the RAW after WM, lay out the tourney winner, and do a 2-month feud for the title would be really great.

Then throw him into MITB and let him compete for the US title after.

I would actually really like to see Neville feud with Dunne if he comes back. Those two would put on killer matches.

Buddy Murphy is an interesting 205 live choice. Feels like they have to have longer actual plans with him. Otherwise they could just use Burch or Lorcan.

Either that or he's failing his weigh in next week and getting replaced by Neville ;-p

Oney is injured and I don't think Burch is signed (if it matters), but yeah those guys would probably be in this if they were available.
