Recently I was able to connect with the Michigan-based metalcore band, Wounded Touch, to discuss what went into the process of their Smartpunk Records sophomore LP, A Vivid Depiction of Collapse. The band’s publicist had a cool idea of having two of the band members interview each other to get some rich insight on what make’s the band tick, so I was all for it! Kyle Maddock interviews Wounded Touch drummer Jeremy Schultz below. If you’re enjoying the band member vs. band member banter, please consider pre-ordering A Vivid Depiction of Collapse before it releases on May 16th here.

Kyle Maddock: Favorite drummer of all time?

Jeremy Schultz: This would have to be Micheal Giles(original drummer of King Crimson). I purposely try to emulate and rip fills and structural parts from his drumming on “In the Court of the Crimson King” my inspiration for not using a resonant rack Tom head, to get that concert tom quick cutting sound. Second mention would have to be the late great Tony Williams. This man changed my whole perspective of drums when I was probably in my early 20s (yes I was late to the game), truly the all around best drummer to grace us. Rest on forever!

    Kyle Maddock: Favorite Detroit bar/nightclub?

Jeremy Schultz: As far as an official venue for general shows; the Majestic Theater no doubt has my favorite memories, paired with the Magic Stick upstairs and Sgt Pepperoni’s, you can’t go wrong. As far as spot to go after the Majestic for more of a late night vibe, City Club is equally trashy as it is awesome for all your goth clubbing needs.

Kyle Maddock: Most underrated band of all time?

    Jeremy Schultz: Failure or Can.

Kyle Maddock: You’re allergic to nuts. What was your worst nut allergy scare?

Jeremy Schultz: I was working at Carhartt in Detroit, and the staff liked getting us Pizza on Thursdays. They asked all of us what we wanted, and I had let them know anything but tree nuts, and as they called up the Jolly Pumpkin, on speaker phone mind you, they asked if their pesto pizza had tree nuts in it they said nope! It’s not authentically made. Sure enough I had two bites, spit it out, and within 30/40 minutes my head blew up like a space invader. There was nobody in close proximity to me, so I drove myself to the hospital. They had told me I was 5 minutes away from death.

Kyle Maddock: What was the first time you saw boobs in a movie?

Jeremy Schultz: Titanic is probably the obvious first choice where I saw it so young that my parents didn’t realize they were gonna have to shield my eyes from boobs, but the more official second time was definitely the Starship Troopers shower scene.

Kyle Maddock: Barefoot or shoes when playing drums?

Jeremy Schultz: I’m gonna have to go with socks! I need to have as natural of a feel as possible, but barefoot is not fun.

Kyle Maddock: Favorite band in Michigan?

    Jeremy Schultz: Greet Death.

Kyle Maddock: What are your essentials for the van?

    Jeremy Schultz: The Piss Jug.

Kyle Maddock: Favorite song to play on the album?

Jeremy Schultz: Hard to pick, so I’m gonna pick three. “The Damning Variable”, “Every Grieving Piece”, or “Dreams In Triage”.

Kyle Maddock: Who are you excited to see at Furnace Fest?

Jeremy Schultz: Foundation, Martyr A.D. Modern Life is War, On Broken Wings, Nora, and Jimmy Eat World!
